With the excess death rate were they doing like for like, weeks, months or years?
If the latter, are they taking in to account that with a growing and ageing population, the death rate will increase annually.

Going by the nearest thousand, the ONS reported that there was 607 thousands deaths registered in England & Wales in 2020, compared to 531 thousand in 2019. So an increase of 76 thousand (14.5%)

If you look at the death rate over a five year period, 2015-2019 then you get an average of 532 thousand deaths per year, still an increase of 75 thousand.

Then if you look further back 2010 to 2014, you get an average of 497 thousand deaths per year. So, the average death rate from 2015-2019 has increased by 7%

We can't predict the future, but you could say from 2020 to 2024 death rate might go up again by 7%. Now if it did, we would be looking at 569 thousand deaths annually, which then would give you an excess death rate of 38 thousand for 2020.

No one can predict the future, just give projections but when you have an ageing and increasing population, death rates will increase regardless.

Following on from the mask discussion. I wonder how builders masks would rate for protection?

@gks very interesting. So escalating death rates are going to save us from a "soylent green" future perhaps. Housing and food security issues will be corrected without eating our old.

Mother nature teaching us a lesson about her scorn!

I'm feeling positive about this milder variant taking over :fingers crossed:

Which would be a good reason for BoJo to lift restrictions and let everyone get a natural booster from infection, whilst within this 10 week period. This info relates to anti bodies - which are made when you are infected - they are not needed when you recover. If we kept them all - from every infection - our blood would become overloaded and look like treacle .

UK scientists back Covid boosters as study finds post-jab falls in antibodies

Media not telling the whole story again. Yes, antibodies do go down over time - but other parts of the immune system remember how to make them - so we can produce new ones fast enough to stop serious illness.

The pandemic is crashing - even the Government are now starting to acknowledge that it's not as bad as they were making out.

What does continue to niggle me a little bit is that we were told by SA medical professionals a month or so back that there is nothing to worry about. Our response - Whitters goes into panic mode and scares everybody again.

like us alot of people have lung issues and get on going infections and on antibotics even a cold for me can turn into a infection . like a lot of people are concerned over the goverments mixed advice and dont take advice from science according to the news etc , i see people who have caught covid how seems to have super human antibodies but who is going to take the risk over catching covid people are still scared of covid . even nhs are scared of vaccines ...
now there seems to be yet another varient about flu plus covid .. plus there is stikes . workers missing due to illness over covid .. cases are still rising up people still dieing and yet they say is milder no more restructions ... does the goverment want us all to catch covid and have a lottery on who will live and die ??

What's happened in South Africa is now happening in London:

The rate of hospitalisations in London during the latest wave of Covid infections may have peaked, a health boss tells the BBC.

Chris Hopson, the chief executive of NHS Providers, says in London - the first region to be hit hard by Omicron - the number of hospitalisations has "dropped significantly" in the past two days.

They've just announced that starting this week only QR codes for proof of vaccination will be accepted to gain entry to all public places other than food stores, pharmacies and other essential goods suppliers. You need it for restaurants and gyms, etc. Masks are still mandatory.

                From our today's news ...

"Covid-19: Most internees are not vaccinated By Agência Lusa • January 3, 2022 - 13:40 "This is the best indicator to make this call for vaccination",

The Deputy Secretary of State and Health said this Monday, January 3, that almost 90% of hospitalized patients with Covid-19 in intensive care did not receive the vaccine, having reinforced the call for people to get vaccinated."

I've been vaccinated but I wouldn't know how to show proof of it other than a small scrap of card stating what vaccine I've had.

I could easily lend that to someone else if I wanted to.

Besides the card filled in on the date of the vaccines, we can print off a Certificate with a QR code that can be scanned to go into places requiring such. And you can load it to your mobile .Can't you do that?

We must show the QR plus a piece of I.D. with our picture on it.

They've just announced that we're pretty much locked down again. No schools open. Online learning only. No indoor dining and in sub zero temps, that means no restaurant dining at all.

50% capacity limits in most other public settings.

Getting a bit tired of this nonsense!

I dont know what we are supposed to do, or for that matter are expected to do.
I dont have a printer, lots of people still dont have mobile phones and where do you go for that information anyway.
