My thoughts though regarding vaccination are that you do it for yourself, there is too much emphasis being put on doing this and doing that for others.

If you want to wear a mask wear one, if you want to get vaccinated then do so, if you want to isolate then do it.
But don't get upset if everyone else isn't doing exactly what you are.

I know people who still smoke, but I not going to hassle them all the time into stopping.
People drink too much but its not up to me to condemn them.
I can have an opinion about it but these days every thing seems to revolve around setting one part of the population against the other.

I see where you are coming from, however taxation in those ways is considerably different to charging people more to access healthcare because they chose not to take a therapeutic. I don't know what worries me more - the fact that this sort of tyranny is taking place in the first place, or the fact that there are folk clapping like demented seals with glee that it is.

          Agree. :blue thumb:

I try not to get into these sort of debates as they tend to go nowhere because nobody changes their minds - and I'm on a gardening forum to enjoy myself - but if you start charging extra for healthcare it's a slippery slope to the nail in the coffin (is that an appropriate word to use?) for the NHS. Then we start charging for people being hospitalised from smoking or being overweight etc.

I'm reminded of the poem by Martin Niemoller:-

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew

          Then they came for me
And there was no one left to speak out for me.

When are they going to start handing out the yellow stars to be worn?

The government does collect lots of tax on booze and tobacco and other "sin" taxes over here too so in a way, the imbibers are already paying extra health tax up front. Nobody would be denied health care in any instance. This premier is also looking at requiring a vaccination passport to purchase booze and cannabis or any other product not considered essential. Pretty draconian but it shows how serious matters have become in their province.

The problem with Quebec is that their numbers of infected and hospitalized are disproportionately high compared to the rest of the country. They even have curfews now. And their percentage of population who have stepped up to be vaccinated is the lowest in the country. And lots of dying from covid. Dead people. Sad.

It's a shame that these types of threats are being pondered but I'm guessing this is a last resort to prod people to do the right thing.

Our province is now starting to report the actual number of people admitted to hospital specifically because of covid, and separately the case data for those who were admitted for other reasons/procedures who then tested whilst there and incidentally and asymptomatically have it. And about time they made that distinction instead of warping the data.

And I'm wondering what is wrong with the supposed brain boxes running the health system. Here we are with with 400 people in ICU's being the reason the rest of the province (near 15 million vaccinated (87%) people) are being shut down because the hospitals have not created a way to handle this emergency. Big money goes to the administrative staff of these institutions and I would have thought after two years, they'd have come up with something to manage the care levels needed!

There is a lot of truth and common sense in what the senior citizen says, the UK is building up a massive debt that will have to be paid back by future young generations.

OH DEAR, @shiney we're not talking about ethnic or political or religious "cleansing" AKA the Holocaust which was the most evil thing this world has ever witnessed.

I talking about just stepping up and getting vaccinated. The unvaccinated are delaying much needed surgeries for people with chronic conditions by taking up hospital space. Their hospital stay might have been avoided because of milder symptoms or very short if only they had gotten the jab.

Yes, it's not guaranteed to keep you out of the hospital but the actual numbers back up how much impact this resistance to getting the jab has caused. 90% of patients in our ICU's for Covid are not vaccinated and the unvaccinated are only 13% of our entire population.

They're hurting themselves and cancer patients and everyone else waiting for medical procedures. Yes, not all delays are their fault nor are all the vaccinated responsible for people dying from not getting their cancer treatments or other procedures. Some don't get sick at all.

But to me, it comes down to a few stubborn people hurting many people in the name of "freedom". Two of my close friends are suffering because of the available hospital beds being repeatedly yanked away at the last minute, due to these people needing the space.

It is not about people who eat too much or smoke or drink or any lifestyle addiction or practice a certain faith.

It is simply a jab. Not rehab.

"Indian man got 12 COVID shots because he wanted to 'feel stronger'
The 84-year-old also believed the shots eased his joint pain"

I could not believe this- and then I thought, yes, his joints wouldn't ache as much because those shots give you a sore arm and then you don't move it around as much!

Sorry. you missed my point - which is why I rarely say anything on threads that are not gardening or humorous. With apologies, I'll just expand a little further and then back out of this thread.

Pre Covid there were political rumblings about charging (taxing) people to use the NHS if they put what appeared to be undue stress on the system (who chooses the parameters?). The leading points that were brought up were smoking, being overweight, alcoholism and other forms of addiction but those were not the only things mentioned. Proposing to charge people for not having had the vaccine is just another one on the list. There were people from a lot of political points of view that supported it but it was soon shouted down, not least from the medical profession who said the whole point of our NHS is 'healthcare free for all'.

It's a slippery slope when you start charging for healthcare as it will soon become easier to add to the list.

P.S. I am triple jabbed and have private healthcare - as I'm fortunate to be in that situation where I can relieve the burden on the NHS a little bit - another political debate I don't wish to get into. :)

                        About time.

The self-isolation period for people who test positive for Covid-19 is being cut to five full days in England, Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said.

Sajid needs to get rid it entirely.

@shiney, I agree that private healthcare is hands down much better than public run institutions and wish it was welcomed here. I don't agree with charging people extra for health care due to "pre-existing" type of conditions. Public healthcare is there for everyone rich or poor.

But the vax tax they are proposing/threatening in Quebec certainly prodded many of the stubborn or "too busy". Yesterday there were thousands and thousands lined up for their first jab. :dbgrtmb:

The good thing in our province that has just happened is that someone higher up woke up and realized that it the marginalized that are lacking vaccines and most not by choice. It is just harder for them to get to the vaccination centers. So they are opening massive pop up inoculation centers in their neighbourhoods and are open late so the people can get the jab without losing pay. :dbgrtmb:
