But most people don't know or care what happens to their rubbish after they think they've disposed of it properly. Most people think the stuff they put in recycling magically turns into brand new stuff and doesn't get shipped to the other side of the planet where it just accumulates in great piles in some third world country.

That is shameful @Clueless 1 v2 that your country has done so little to educate people about this important issue!

I doubt very much it's just a UK issue. Do you know where your recycling goes?

I was under the impression that had been stopped for some time now and it ends up in recycling centres, the stuff they cant recycle around here goes to an incinerator which was very controversial when they built it not far from houses.
But its all gone quiet now as it doesn't produce the pollution everyone was expecting.

I know that several countries brought in new laws basically banning us and others from dumping our 'recycling' there. I wasn't aware that the wealthy countries had taken steps to improve things but that's good if true.

There was a news article just a few months ago that said only a small percentage of our recycling actually gets recycled so I guess we still have a way to go.

I was under the impression that although you could argue we were dumping our rubbish in other countries they were actually being paid to take it and pretending to be processing it.

We were also sending out what was supposed to be "clean" waste but it contained medical waste and other toxins. That was private companies that were doing that. Not the UK government.
Such as the private company that was supposed to be incinerating clinical waste but leaving it in open sites.

Firm stepping into NHS clinical waste crisis hit with £500k in environment fines

There are lots of politics around the issue which quite honestly I don't fully understand and am not really interested in. My point was that it happens, but most people don't know it happens. It's hard to believe that the very same organisations that push the green image of recycling didn't know it happened.

That's still debateable. There are certainly many incineration centres around the country (they were originally aiming at 100) but the initial problem was that they also produced carbon dioxide. They, apparently, have tightened up on the filtering regulations but I have no idea whether that has been effective. Some of them actually produce power for the locality. I think they do reduce the total amount of CO2 produced but now produce it, to some extent, here in this country as they used to export the problem.

I did look at some of the research produced but all of them came up with different results. I guess that those results depended on how it was looked at and tested as I don't think, at the time, any of them were independent studies.
