Does anyone know where I could get some basswood from? Think it is American Lime. I'm using lime from the uk, and think it is harder, with more of a grain. Basswood sounds like the best thing for a beginner. I'm a bit blurry on things, as I'm only starting carving as a hobby. Began with a stick dressers' club, but soon found I was much more interested in carving the handles than anything else.

Are you talking about Balsa wood D?

I've just found an address in your area. A model making shop at 18 Alderwood, Chineham. Apparently they sell the wood in various forms. :)

No, that is a Tillia wood, not Balsa Sheal :)

Yandles will probably have it, just down the A303 from Basingstoat :)

Yandles appear to have basswood as part of a carving set, but nothing else. Ta though, Zigs.
I might nip in there at some point. A dangerous thing to do. Maybe I'll go in without any means of paying; that's the only way I can think of to not be able to purchase all the glorious things I would no doubt pick up in there.

If you have some spray paint, you could spray the gold pieces at an angle with a darker shade, and it might pick them out and give them a 3D sort of look?

I carve wood and I haven't even bothered with carving in basswood yet. Don't let the wood you have restrict what you want to do (within reason). All I had when I started out was oak and pine and so taught myself with that. Lime and Basswood are more or less the same for carving, although I have yet to try working on these woods, as I have a lump of lime seasoning at the moment.

Also if you can try and carve in some green wood, this is much softer than kiln dried stuff. If you can get hold of a lump of silver birch I highly recommended trying this to.

Its made from sparkly metallic fine yarn with a lighter and darker shade

I think spraying it may end up looking messy and you would lose the sparkly bits

                          And thank you autumnbliss

I had a load of the bones left over from the cake along with the buttercream and so made little cupcakes and topped them with the leftovers. Gave them to my fellow volunteers

Last year's wreath with a new look for 2014. The wreath is hung up in the garage all year and as I attached the leaves, a little spider kept popping out, had a look round and then crawled back into the grass. He's in there somewhere
