Hi Jane, what's the problem with your machine?

 

I'm trying to appliqué a felt Christmas tree onto a piece of white fabric, rquite thick like upholstering fabric.

I've found all of a sudden though my machine isn't picking up my bobbin thread and my thread keeps breaking on the top too. I tried changing my needle, but this hasn't fixed the problem and keeps bunching up the bobbin thread now.

Have your tension settings changed? And are you using good quality cotton?

JJ - changing the needle will not fix the issue. This is a tension issue: did you see my post on this very thread re your bobbin issues? (Post #382) it is worth a read so you can sort your tension issues out

If all else fails, you could use a bonding fabric (bit like wonder web for hemming, but sold in larger sizes). That way you could use the bonding fabric to applique the tree to the backing fabric and then, either leave it as it is, or use a hand stitched "blanket" stitch around the edges to secure and embellish it further and depending on what it is going to be used for and the wear and tear aspect

 

I have had my sewing machine for over 7 years (and have been using a sewing machine for much longer) and I had no idea there was a tension setting g for the bobbin! Lol

@Jungle Jane hopefully "M" has sorted the problem for you but there is a chance that it won't make any difference. I found if what's being stitched is to thick then the machine just cannot cope and it will keep throwing the tension haywire, particularly on your machine which at seven years old is relatively new. I had on going issues like this with a modern machine many years ago and gave up, part-exchanging it for one that is now nearly sixty years old, basic, and will stitch through just about anything.
