It will be good to see your work again, Platty. What new camera did you buy?

Hi HB. Basically all I could afford.

A fujifilm S9600. Just released in August 2006 it has a resolution of 9.1 million pixels and a 28mm to 300mm zoom lens with aperture rate of F2.8--F4.9 and shutter speeds from 30 secs to 1/4000 sec.

Not a full SLR but good enough to stretch me ( Once I have cracked it) and while I loose a bit with not having interchangeable lenses it does cut down the risk of dust to nil.

A neat gimmick is the adjustable LCD screen. It can be angled to see these awkward shots.

Camera sounds good, Platty. I went for a halfway camera too as I didn't want to spend mega ££s on a digital SLR. Mine is the Lumix. The telephoto and macro are really powerful and it's so much lighter than an SLR with all those heavy interchangeable lenses. Most of the time I still use my old tiny compact camera that is so small it clips on my belt. I have it with me always and it does most of what I want. Can't see myself bothering with an SLR again.

Good luck with it. You have taken some super pictures and I look forward to seeing more. I always say that the photographer's eye is more important than the photographer's camera.

You have a very good eye for a picture!

Well, I've completed the Major Arcana now, but I'm not sure if successfuly! Some are better than others. I'll not atttempt the Minor Arcana, but I might have a go at some of the court cards.

With a whole day to myself and the sun shining I just took myself off to try out the new camera.

The following are three of the resulting pictures. My verdict to date. Pretty good in 'auto' mode but not too hot at full 300 mm zoom.

    DELICATE AND POWERFUL

At 300mm zoom, you just cannot hold the camera steady enough. Some cameras have a built in "judder reduction" facility. Mine does and it works quite well, but you really need to use a tripod or some form of support for full 300mm telephoto. It's just like trying to hold a telescope still - you can't and so your image will never be sharp. There is a new compact tripod on the market called a "gorillapod". They are about £30 from Amazon and I've bought myself one for Christmas. See:
