A lovely mixture of pathos and bright cheerfulness in that one GW. I like it very much.

I am only pleased if somebody make use of some of the pictures that I post as I am not into computer art so my contribution can only be some "raw material" - and i did get that you prefer smaller size pictures.
Up to you if you want to use the pictures or not, i will certainly don't mind either ways.
Brilliant work, by the way with the alpaca etc..

Wildflower, do you still run the wildflower society?

Do all these photos from Flickr have copyright clearance, Miraflores?

I cannot answer your question, Hornbeam. But how do you prevent somebody copying your pictures online? You either sign your picture (on top of the picture itself) or somehow you make it impossible to copy it, oterwise you can at least expect any use and misuse of your material.

Any picture that is on your screen can be copied using the 'screenshot' function. It can then be adjusted using picture editing software, which includes removing signatures. It's like music- the internet makes downloading and copying almost impossible to stop.

Yes but if you then use someone else's photo by publishing it on a website - you are in breach of copyright law. It is piracy and GC mods need to be aware. That is why Platty stressed that Freefoto was free and we could use those photos as long as we mentioned FreeFoto as the source. Flickr has not given us that clearance

Others must do what they think right, but I am not going to pinch other photographers' work. If that sounds like I'm taking the moral high ground - tough. Just remember that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Same goes for scanning in pictures from books etc. Do it for fun, but when you post it on GC you are publishing it on the world wide web and are guilty of piracy.

One of the things I love about the world wide web is the freedom of information which has been an important aspect right from the start.
If I find pictures, music or information then I feel quite OK about using them, sending to other people, posting on GC etc.
One thing I would say about pictures is that if you post a picture of a smallish size with low pixcel value then it is not going to be 'pirated'. Same goes for music. I think everyone who wishes to sell images or sounds is aware of this.
Old-fashioned copyright laws are unenforceable in these respects- and it is virtually impossible to protect anything once it is released into the public domain...

I am just showing you these few lines taken from flicks Frequently Asked Questions, of which i supply the link.
Alltogether, it sounds like it is ok for anybody to download pictures as long as the owner of the picture does not restrict that by means which are explained in the FAQ.
I will try and do some direct enquiry with flickr anyway.

How can I copyright my photos?

In most parts of the world including the US, Canada, EU countries and Japan, you don't have to do anything to copyright your photos. That right is granted automatically as soon as you take the photo.

However, Creative Commons is a non-profit that offers an alternative to full copyright. There are six default licenses to choose from. You should choose the one that best suits your needs.

It is important to remember that you can only copyright images that you own. This means you can't copyright images that you've taken from somewhere else! Additionally, just because an image does not have a Creative Commons license attached to it doesn't mean that it is public domain.

You can select a default license for your photos from here.

You can add a license for a specific picture by clicking on the "change" link next to your current photo license (usually set to "All rights reserved") under the ââ?¬Å?Additional Informationââ?¬Â area near the bottom of your photo page. This link will take you to the Privacy and permissions settings page for that photo. On the right hand side, near the bottom, you will see a link that says "Add a license to your photo". Clicking on that will bring you to a screen where you can choose from one of the six Creative Commons licenses.

I don't want anyone to download my photos. How do I stop that?

You can set a global preference which controls who can download all the different versions of your photos, including the original size. Just choose a relationship level that you're comfortable, from "Only Me" to "Anyone". Being global, it affects all your photos, and is combined with your privacy settings.

Here's an example: You publish a photo of an icecream. If you are only sharing that photo with friends, only your friends will see the icecream photo. Let's say you've set your Allow Downloads to "Anyone". This doesn't mean that anyone will be able to download your icecream photo, because only your friends can access it.

If you have applied a Creative Commons license to your photos, this automatically assumes that you are okay with others downloading your photos. Remove the Creative Commons license from here if you do not want others to download your photos.

But of course if your concern is that those who post in "creative computer art" have to use only their own picture to create some effect , of course that is a different story...

I'll not argue with you Liz. The point is that no one is going to worry if you download photos and use them for your own amusement or send them to friends. It is quite different when you publish them on the web as we do when we adapt them in the Computer Art section. If Nathan and the mods don't care - I'll say no more about it.

Yes, on the whole I agree about use of other peoples' pictures in this section- it isn't entirely your own production then.
It's a bit like 'sampling' in music though- something new from an old source.
It's a very difficult area these days.

Just jumping in to say..We dont use much from flickr normally ..As the members in the creative art supply photographs from their own collections..We do use pictures from freefoto but with permission.,.Perhaps it may be best if the members who join in making pictures just supply their own photos..And if anyone copys our work well its just life..as we only do it for fun..so why should we stop having fun.. :D Our pictures are not great works of art just fun art work..if any of us do a special picture for themselves then they dont put it up on gc ..
