I was just wondering - would we want to help each other by giving brief descriptions of how we acheived various effects?

I have no problem with that. It would be great to pick up some new techniques and share some of my favourites.

for the fern pic i used ulead software
1.used a pic of some grass as my background
2 cloned HB's fern onto it
3 added some cloud effects changing the colours each time
    4 used 'punch' effect
    5 added black border

To put something on to a black background, you isolate it with the magic wand tool. Go to selections and click on invert. Then flood the background with blackpaint using the Paint Bucket tool. The trick is to use the Magic Wand to capture the subject and seperate it from background clutter. Much depends on the nature of the photograph. Even so, it is essential to experiment with the Tolerance levels (1-100) of the magic wand. If you don't get that right you get bits missing or fragments of background atached. You then have to laboriously paint them out.
