Perhaps try some outside [i.e. as well as inside] next year? If they manage OK then that might be a solution?

Just picked the cucumber that I used to show the problem in post #1. After I cut it just above the oozing deposit, it grew on happily as if nothing happened.

Lucky you, I have them everywhere, on my houseplants, in greenhouses and even on my outdoor french beans. Sprayed them with Vitax Organic 2 in 1 pest & disease control (the only thing I could find to use on edible plants), made the whole area smell like rotten fish. If I were to be sprayed head to toe with it, I'd have been suffocated to death for sure, but to my annoyance the spider mites simply shrug the spray off and keep on with their business as usual.

Funnily when it is hot they tend to climb up to the top of the supporting canes and often result a dense colony, so every now and then I run my fingers up the cane to the top to squash as many as I can. Most satisfying (though a bit messy).

Good idea. Don't think there is anything to lose, is there?

Well, I don't think we've solved the mystery but all of you have certainly given me plenty of food for thought, and offered useful suggestions. Thank you all very much.

If you ever come across some info in future could you please keep me posted?

They've got a maximum of two chances :heehee:

Dunno whether I should, or not?? but I use Neem Oil (and Horticultural soap as a wetting agent) on edibles that get plagued with aphid or Red Spider, and it seems effective (although Cucumber leaves tend to dry up and go brittle as a result, but the plants have (so far!!) grown out of that.
