Thanks Loli, they're definitely 'tissue' songs! I can count the female singers I like on one hand and Barbra Streisand is amongst them, such an emotional singer. :)

Well at risk of introducing a modicum of modernity to this thread :pathd::

Sheal, Streisand is a classic and have always loved No More Tears (which I always refer to as Enough is Enough ...) and still have it on an ALBUM ... remember them folks? :heehee:

How many of you are fans of these two classic singers?

When I was a bit younger, when I was a 'young man about town', I used to love a good knees up in the local night clubs. I didn't used to bother with the 'trendy' ones, because I was a bit of a raver. Still, it was nice that sometimes the DJ's would give us a brief rest from banging hardcore anthems to give us such cheerful tunes as this one:

(Had to find a version without the video, because unfortunately the official video has the typically European liberal approach to erm, things, but the song is innocent enough).

Same group also brought us the slightly more rebellious anthem, but still on a very cheery note:)

Barbra is certainly a classic (although she was singing under the name of Barbra she didn't actually change her name to it until 1967) and has won more awards than any other female singer. On her 1963 album, 'The Barbra Streisand Album', Harold Arlen wrote 'This young lady has a stunning future'. He really knew what he was talking about.

Harold Arlen wrote the songs for 'The Wizard of Oz' and also wrote famous songs like 'Let's Fall in Love', 'Stormy Weather', 'That Old Black Magic', 'Blues In The Night', 'One For My Baby', 'Come Rain or Come Shine' (some of them in collaboration) and over 500 other songs.

Victoria, as you would expect, I remember them :blue thumb:

Cat Stevens was extrememly popular and got over a dozen Gold and twenty Platinum records - but never got to number one in the UK (got to number two a few times).

After he changed his name to Yusuf Islam he had problems in America. His flight to the U.S. was stopped early and he was refused entry by Homeland security and put on the 'no fly' list for being linked with terrorists. This caused a political controversy and the UK government objected.
Yusuf had been given awards for working for world peace whereas the 'terrorist' had the same name but spelt differently. It took a couple of years to sort it out. He's still performing under the name of Yusuf.

Jim Croce didn't get much of a chance to become popular in this country (although he'd had a number of number one hits in the U.S.) as he died in a tragic accident.
In 1973 the plane he was on hit a tree just after take off. It was blamed on pilot error but it turned out, later, that the pilot had a heart attack. A couple of his other famous songs were 'Bad Boy Leroy Brown' and 'I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song'.
