    If you're cooking a steak in a slooooow cooker then a tip is to quickly seal the meat in a frying pan before popping it in the cooker. Onions also benefit from the same treatment.

    Well it was an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions:(

    The rice came out as tasteless mush, and the curry had little flavour, and the beef was still a tad chewy and the sauce hadn't reduced down at all.

    Still, we live and learn. I did read that the sauce doesn't reduce in a slow cooker the way it does by other methods, but I didn't believe that anything could cook for hours without reducing. That'll teach me.

    Sounds like a bit of experimenting coming up. Try watching a few Ray Mears progs, its amazing what he'll throw in a hole full of hot rocks & seal up for a few hours.

    :WINK1: Oh Clueless, I am so sorry,,, No rice doen't do too well in a slowcooker.. I have a rice cooker cooker fpr that.. Brilliant at £12.50.. Never have soggy rice again.. If you get one let me know as I have a tip to stop the rice sticking.... :WINK1:

    :WINK1: The other thing is I always fry any meat veg & spices first then tip it into the slow cooker... That way you seal in the flavour of the meat & set the flavour of any spices..... I also leave it cooking all day long from early morning in the warmed slow cooker not sure how long you left it but with a joint I would probably leave it overnight to cook. The longer the better anyway.. After all it is only the cost of a light bulb... :WINK1:... You sort of have to have tomorrows meal in there sorted the day before & start any meat ASAP for tenderness if you know what I mean........:WINK1: :thumbsup: Don't give up mate, we all have a few disasters with new gadgets... Good Luck with Tomorrows meal.... ~I take it is stew.. :D You can stir fry & seal your meat & veg in the Micro first until you get your new cooker in....:WINK1::WINK1:

    Thanks for that, that's very kind of you. There you are then, its your fault:) Seriously though its nobody's fault (except mine) and I'm not even disappointed. Its the first time I've ever used this newfangled gadget, and will take me a while to adapt to it. Of course it would help if I actually took people's advice a bit more, I read many articles about cooking with a slow cooker and didn't entirely believe them.

    I remember when I was at school, we had a rather eccentric teacher who could probably teach Ray Mears a thing or too. She taught us that the best way to cook a hedgehog. I hope nobody tried it, suffice to say her method seemed a little bit cruel.

    I considered buying a rice cooker, but then I thought I'd just get the steamer for the micro but forgot to buy one. I'll definitely do one or the other. How do you stir fry and sear things in the microwave?

    I'm just about to go and eat the curry I made yesterday :heehee:. I didn't see this thread until now but would never recommend using brisket for a curry.

    Brisket need a longgggg time to cook. I only ever use it for making salt beef (I've got some in brine at the moment) but it can be used for for very long slow braising in the oven after having browned the joint off first. I guess a slow cooker would do the same job.

    :WINK1: I usually sear meat & veg on full in 2 minute bursts stir fry in a casserole dish & stop about every 30 secs or so... Once the meat is sealed I add the veg.. Stir fry for about another 2 mins.. Stopping at about 30secs bursts & stir around.... Then when all coated & sealed & any herbs or spices added..... Then add some of the water or stock whatever you are adding, but heat to nearly boiling in micro first..Then transfer to slow cooker for many hours as poss cooking.... If I were you Clueless anyway to get flavour.. :WINK1:

    There's one or two cheap recipe books out for Slooooow Cookers, Clueless. There's some great ideas about how to use them. I really am sorry your first attempt was not a success.
