I left half a dozen out in pots over the Winter - all are now coming back into leaf! Slower than the greenhouse ones but I did take the tubers out and place in new compost - I think they are OK as long as they are protected a little bit and we dont have a harsh winter!

Yes, properly outside. My garden is walled, which keeps the temps up a bit and it's mainly frost free, but kept in their pots outside all winter. Under the decking keeps them dry so I guess that helps too.

Interesting. I will probably try this as lots of mine will be in pots and I really don't have room in the flat... Plus we didn't get any frost in our garden this winter just gone.

Ooh, whereabouts are you based? Can Dahlias go out as long as they just don't get frost? Or can tolerate temps of 5-8 C at night?

I'm in Bristol. It's due to be wet tomorrow and the following days are set fairly mild. As long as we don't get a frost, they'll be fine. I reckon we've probably seen the last of the frost now, but I'll need to be prepared to cover if necessary.

I like the dwarf varieties and plant some every year. Unfortunately earwigs love them also, so they do require some spraying, but they are worth the effort.

I planted three lovely dahlias in the front garden yesterday night, Classic Poeme, Arabian Night adn Boneta and sprayed the slug pellets around them. Went out this morning first thing and there were 10 slugs and snails around them, the geraniums and lobelia! Fortunately all dead/dying! Trying times!

I dug one up last December as I wanted to move it to a different spot (I don't normally lift my dahlias and I've never lost any, even though temperatures have been down to -10C in previous years). Must have left a bit of tuber behind as there are shoots coming up. A bit annoying as it's too big for that spot but since it's got this far I'll leave it there for this year. Dahlias are tougher than you think!

Yup, they are super tough. I left 8 of so in pots over Winter and they have now all started sprouting. Behind the greenhouse ones for sure but coming!

I too fell in love with dahlias last year after my dad got an allotment and I saw some coral coloured pompoms.
He bought the seeds for me and started them off and I dug an extra border last night and planted them out.
I'm quite a newbie to this gardening lark and read about pinching them to encourage bushier growth. Is this something I should do?
Also, do you get multiple flowers on one plant?
