Keith - its really difficult to tell

Datura inoxia. This picture seems to agree with my book. Inoxia has 5 pronounced points with minor points between.

Datura wrightii. And this picture shows more pronounced points between the 5 major points, which could result in it being called a ten point flower.

Its a bit subtle for me :rolleyespink:. Now if one was bright red and the other bright blue I could be more sure :WINK1:.

        Hiya chums.

Thanks for your very kind offer, which is one I may well take you up on :)

Kristen, I took a look at the link you posted, and that's pretty much what I'm looking for. Only one thing though, it says "End Use: Conservatory plant, and sheltered position outdoors in containers in Summer." which implies that it's a bit on the tender side, yes? Are they all a bit tender? Thing is, it would have to go outside, and it CAN get a bit windy hereabouts.

        Cheers...Freddy.

Freddy - yes they are tender in so far as they don't like frost. but mine seem to thrive quite happily outside once the weather has warmed up a bit.

It appears that both inoxia and wrightii produce tubers/rhizomes that can be overwintered in the same way as Dahlias, which makes overwintering them much easier than most tender plants. They also seem to grow and flower easily from seed in the first year - so they could be grown as an annual.

Hiya PeterS, thanks for that. One thing, is it just a case of sowing the seed as normal? Or, do you have to 'nick' them?

          Freddy;
I've grown D.metel for many years as an annual.
Last year was the first time with wrightii, but it performed really well. It may well be that I will be even more impressed with it in year two...........

Freddy - you don't have to nick them or do anything special. Some sites say stratify them - ie put them in a bag with a bit of damp compost in the fridge for a while. You probably will get better germination, but I have never bothered. You could always soak them for 24 hours, which may help but I don't think even that is necessary.

I always give mine the hot water soak for 24hrs.
Best germination I've found is to surface sow and lightly press them into the surface.

I peal mine (remove the cork-like outer material) which I think speeds up germination. Fiddly to do though ...

              Hi folks.

Well, true to his word, longk has kindly sent me some seed :) I shall sow these tomorrow (in the propagator) after soaking for 24 hrs.

              Thanks longk :thumb:
