Yes I would have thought "dinner" too - especially the drakes. we have so many round here that they drownd the poor hens trying to mate them all at once poot things, then they drownd the ducklings.

You can clip their wings, once they establish the nest as home they will probably stay anyway.

Wow - what I would give to have a pond big enough for ducks in my back garden.....!!! (on second thoughts, it would be a nightmare with the dog!!!)
If you have terrapins in the pond (turtley things), beware!!!!! They are vicious predators!!!! Can give a nasty bite, and love nothing better than a juicy tender cute duckling for dinner!! Swim up from underneath!!! How many do you have? You may want to think about getting rid of them before they breed and eat all your fish, too..... alas they are the aftermarth of the 1980's children's craze for Mutant Ninja Turtles on the tv....

Honey Bee it is my sister that has the turtley thing, but I think there is only one and it has been there years. someone probably had it as a pet and when it got too big just chucked it in the pond - good job it wasn't an aligator!

AND yes I think you are right it could have taken a few ducklings, but she gets over run with them sorry to say. I used to breed them for her and others in my incubator, the Cajuga duck egg is most fascinating as it is absolutely black.
