Just another point on pruning, *dim*. If you look on the Austin website you'll see that the firm keeps its more unruly roses under control by summer pruning, after the first flush of flowers.

Well old TB has taken today and tomorrow off work but is putting off our trip till Sunday...... I think he is hoping for crappy weather or maybe a volcanic eruption so he doesn't have to go. Oh well it gives me 2 days to pester him into going.

I have one David Austin Rose on my patio in a pot and last year it was full of yellow roses in memory of my FIL it came through the winter ok but this year only had a few blooms then leaves developed holes yesterday it got to me so I cut all the leaves with holes off.

I did look on under leaves looked like small tiny catterpillers.

I sprayed it with washing up liquid diluted it seemed to help .

        But lack of blooms.

Iv'e had those as well. I just pick them off and squish them. Have you fed your roses? I give mine tomato feed to get them to flower.

One of the worst pests is definitely rose sawfly. So far this year it hasn't been too bad, but in a bad year they can strip all the leaves back to skeletons in no time. I'm afraid I see no alternative but to zap them regularly!

Just googled the rose saw fly as this was what it was but it only went on to the 1 rose I have the wedding day rose next to it and its been ok.

I was thinking of taking it out of its pot to check compost.

              What do you think ?

How long have you had your rose in the same pot/compost, Scotkat? It's always worth making sure your plant has plenty of room and topping up with fresh compost from time to time.

Clare I have just had this rose since a year past June when my FIL died so we bought rose and pot and planted it 2oth June 2010.

And it bloomed all summer and hand many buds this year and it looked so poorly ok now no leaves .

              Hope shrub will be ok.

I think you rose will be fine with a bit of tlc, Kate.

I feel that roses don't particularly like being grown in pots for any length of time. They're ok for a while but then they start to go downhill. Can you plant your rose out in the garden in a nice, open, sunny position? If not, I would go for the biggest container you can have and use a really good soil-based John Innes compost. Make sure it's well drained, as roses hate sitting in water. On the other hand, don't let your pot dry out too much! With regular feeding and a bit of help with pests I'm sure your rose will be blooming again soon.
