Daylily "Hemerocallis 2013 S W S

Now thats scary Wylie reminded me of one I had earlier in the season on 'Mildred Mitchell', not a very good picture though.

 

Sink Into Your Eyes decided to give a late showing today.

 

Mines reblooming to JazzSi paler flowers than earlier in the year but still lovely, I love the edge on it

 

I have Daring Deceptions, and it was among the first that I got, but it isn't among my favourites, nor do I take a picture of it very often. It reblooms and has a lot of flowers.:

 

I thought I had posted a photo of Raspberry Banana Cheesecake x Teddy Bear's Picnic that is growing in position BSB#22, but when I checked my Windows Gallery by name, BSB#23 was posted - it is a dark purple with black eye. So here it is:

Eder sdlg 0084, reblooming. The actual cross is Fooled Me x Edge of Paradise, but he hasn't registered it. The cross tags are forgivable because in the next 2 weeks they should be ready to pick (the pollen parents were Core Values and Life Is A Highway)

 

A single fan of Hip Hop Music just went for £68.50 on Ebay

 

U-u-u-um, I just bought a single fan of Dragonfly Tattoo for just under that. My philosophy is that it is better to buy 1 great plant than 5 cheap ones.

 

I saw the price of that one going up JazzSi and wondered what it went for.
Think I'm coming round to that way of thinking Wylie now space is becoming an issue and I have a not bad collection now its maybe best just to add the odd good one each year, when I see one I like I do look now to see if I have anything similar as tend to be drawn to the same sort, think the most I've paid so far though is £30.

 

What amazed me was on the Lily Auction where 5 seeds of a Dragonfly Dawn cross went for $125 - that's $25 a seed. The same person was buying other seeds for $75-100/5 seeds.
I did spend 45 Pounds for Strikingly Dramatic and finally saw a photo of it other than the one on the AHS site, and that should be very exciting next year.

 

Its such a gamble with the seeds though isn't it you can never be sure you'll get something really special ,unless its a breeder who's seen crosses from it already? but if its a newish one how can you know what traits it passes on ? or maybe a lottery winner
Now Strikingly Dramatic does look very special and well worth the £45 I've seen it on Sheilas, its only a picture though, I was really tempted to buy it last spring but if I'm spending that sort of money I'd like to see how it performs here first, not having your great weather conditions Wylie , so I'll keep checking for a picture in her own garden first , trouble is when I see yours I'll have to tie my hands behind my back to stop myself buying .

 

You have to do some research to see were a parent came from and what its siblings look like.
Go to a hybridizers website and read what they say about their plants. Also, ask yourself what could be a result in a cross. For example, if you like applique throats, you are going to want one of the parents to have that trait. It's a gamble, but that just adds to the fun and feels really good when it pays off. These professional hybridizers start thousands of seeds every year to get the few they go on to register.
The photo I saw of Strikingly Dramatic is from a nursery in the US state of Connecticut, so it should do really good where you are; although it was bred just south of San Francisco, California [see what you can find out about each plant]. I cann't post the photo because of copyrights, but I'm really looking forward to it.

 

Quick question:

My large clump is now dying back (slowly) but I want to plant some daffodils in that area and remove a shrub I put in the centre. What I'd like to know is: can I cut all the foliage back to the ground so I can remove the shrub and plant my daffs? Or, will that affect next years growth?

 

I have to defer to the expertise of Simbad and Spruce with dormant type daylilies, but it shouldn't affect it. Just be sure to plant the daffs at least 2 feet away from the daylily. It needs the sun to start new growth in the Spring and the root ball on the daylily can be wide. If it is 3-4 years old, you can take advantage of the work in the area to divide it. Daylilies need about 6 weeks before the first frost to settle in.

It'll be fine "M" I know some growers who cut back all their daylilies to the ground at this time of year to clear away any debris that slugs and snails can overwinter in, the evergreens will even reward with fresh new growth :-)
