I wasn't really serious. I sell timber decking for a living, so I was just slagging off composite for the sake of it.:snorky:

How to Build a Deck - Build It

Theres lots of guides available but the one above is fine for a small deck. I'd also add noggins between the joists

I'd agree with that :ccheers: Lay a joist, have a drink, lay another joist, have another drink, etc., etc.

Although it might be better to use noggings.

Oh yes, I meant to say because of the spacing/positioning of the main corner posts (which will form part of a pergola) the spacing will have (?) to be 18”. Should be ok I’d have thought?

Forty years ago I could have calculated where it was required within a first floor zone, now all I can remember about it was that when metal herringbone struts were introduced, entire housing estates had them installed touching one another, causing dreadful squeeking noises as people walked across some first floor rooms, and it was extremely expensive to rectify, as areas of t&g chipboard flooring had to be cut out, half the metal struts removed, replacement struts fixed set back from the opposing struts, then the timber flooring reinstated including noggings and blocking pieces. In bathrooms and WCs with vinyl sheet flooring glued down everything needed replacing, in other rooms carpets had to be lifted and relaid.

And when Mrs Scungee did her post graduate diploma in housing, and this was something that came up under construction defects, I was able to advise her in more detail than her lecturers.

I can remember stuff like that as if it was yesterday, but I can't remember all what happened yesterday

Oh never came across metal ones, only wooden ones.
Remember learning how to get the correct length, by marking out from the tops of the joists.
              Its history now.
