If in 1772 we'd not fought decently and like gentlemen and not worn red coats (perfect targets), unlike those scruffy colonials, then G.Washington Esq. wouldn't have had the opportunity in 1776 to go independent and commence a subversive assault on our language that has continued to this day. The recent recruitment of Microsoft has strengthened the attack.

However wes not beeetin yet lol us bros and sis noes how to speek like proper. Init.

Indeed. I've often wondered how come the British empire got so big considering the military strategy adopted by our side in the days when most of the world was taken was to dress in bright colours and march bolt upright in tight formation, at walking pace, in open ground, when soldiers of every other culture had long since realised that its best to be invisible.

Understand that, but, why no option to change the default?

I Agree with you, "M", that it just appears peculiar.

Although I tend to be rather pedantic about my English spelling and grammar I haven't found any problems on this site. I suppose it would be a problem if it had a spell checker (does it?) and I needed to use it. Otherwise it would seem to be non-intrusive in the normal operation of the site.

Probably never occured to whoever wrote the program.

Shouldn't affect the day to day running of the site. Not noticed anything spelt without a U anywhere.

I have noticed a rivalry between USA English speakers and UK English speakers in the matters of IT, since both countries are very skilled when it comes to IT. I don't think they want to do each other any favour, lets put it this way, in order to retain privileges in the matter.
So things like default settings ,as somebody questioned earlier, are programmed in a way so to be more friendly towards one side rather than the other.
It is an important consideration when it comes to websites building because in spite of some people that may say otherwise, a lot enjoy reading expressions and word forms that "make them feel at home".

The first time I built an e-commerce website as a freelancer some years ago, I refused to use the then standard terminology of 'shopping cart', because, I insisted, I'm British, the sites audience are mostly British, the site will be hosted in Britain, and the man paying for it is British. I offered him 'shopping trolley' or 'shopping basket' but refused to use 'shopping cart'. After much grumbling, we settled on 'shopping basket'. Nowadays you see 'basket' or 'shopping basket' quite a lot on e-commerce sites. Either I started that trend (unlikely), or there are plenty more pedantic people just like me (more likely).
