@ricky101 , thank for the reply.
I never connect the camera, I just remove the SD card from the camera and put it into the slot on the laptop.
I've always found camera software a PITA to be honest, it keeps loading stuff I really dont want to see, as each month I copy every thing off the card to my laptop and then wipe the card so I can start a new month.
I then put the pictures into folders on the hard drive.

Its when selecting the pictures on the SD card, that it can happen, I'm wise to it now but still sometimes fall into the trap if I'm in a hurry.

I'm on windows 8.1 I think, but years ago on XP it used to do this as well.

I have never ever removed my SD cards from my cameras. I just plug the camera in and then copy the files I want, to where I want, like any other drive.

        Hi @pete,

Perhaps you are using a high quality camera but even we find using the smart phone very handy for all day to day photos and they can be connect by usb cable or wifi/bt, removing the sd card from them is not really regular option.
You can see how the inbuilt W10 photo app allows file selection.
        001641.jpg

Have just used a free App from Microsofts Store and it found and remove masses of duplicates on our 15+ year old library. Even we ran it ok in 5 mins !! ( though we do have a backup copies of the Photo library just in case )

        001643.jpg

One last thing w 8.1 is being retired on the 10th Jan, it will still work but you will not get any more updates etc, so you really need to move onto W10 as its inbuilt free security, Windows Defender is top class.

You should still be able to download and install W10 for free, but its very wise to take a full system backup before doing any such work.

Windows 8.1 support will end on January 10, 2023 - Microsoft Support

I've never used the cables that come with cameras, its too much fiddling around for me and as I say you have to use the camera software which takes time to load all the pictures you have ever taken in your whole life to load up.
Its so much easier to just go directly from the card to the hard drive.

As to my phone, the picture quality is not great, and when taking pictures I find I press the button and its a good couple of seconds before it actually takes the picture, my phone is a Samsung but pretty old by modern standards.
Also, can never find anything to hold it by, every bit, screen included does something, I'm just too clumsy.
My laptop doesn't recognise my phone either, so cant transfer pictures from that to the laptop, wont even connect via bluetooth.
Dont mention blutooth by the way, it rarely works well for me with anything.:biggrin:

All sounds like a disaster, but I get by.

Yes, keep getting an annoying message from chrome every time I start up saying I need to up grade in the new year.
I ask a local tech bloke if my Lap top could run W10 and he said it could and he would do it for me for £300 odd, but I'm leaning towards getting a new laptop with W11.

I have never installed any camera software on my laptop. I just use Windows File Explorer.
Another reason I don't remove the SD card is the fact the contacts are so fine and delicate in the camera. I don't want to risk damaging them.

OK maybe it works for you but had to download a programme for my Sony camera, it just comes up all the time and tries to take over.

I use the windows file explorer also, but without the hassle of wires connecting me to the camera, I've never found the contacts on an SD card to be particully fine and delicate in the last 15 yrs.

I should add, my Lap top has never connected to my phone via a cable it just doesn't recognise it.
It will only recognise my camera via the software I needed to download.

Which is why just putting the card in is so much easier.

I prefer using the camera card too and have had no issues with it. I delete images from my camera/s after every use. I wonder if that would make a difference to your problem Pete?

Today I bought my new laptop so no card slot and no built in dvd drive. I'll try connecting my camera via cables but if it's too much hassle I'll buy a plug in reader for the card.

I do exactly the same! Anyway my desktop computer doesn't have a card reader & I've never felt the need to get one either. I've had different phones & cameras over the years but generally I have never had any problems connecting them to the different computers I had.

Generally I don't particularly like the programmes that come with some phones or cameras & I try to bypass them. My latest phone doesn't come with any software & like @Jocko says it just like another drive, rather like a USB drive.

The software usually comes in a download from the camera manufacturer.
I ended up with something called "play memories" got it from Sony, but I should uninstall it as I never use it.

I have a lap top for basically using on my lap, so wires coming out of it usually end up in disaster even the mains wire is a complete PITA but I have to use that as the battery only lasts about 30 minutes these days.

I get the feeling only @Balc has experienced the copying problem, its not a major issue and I only mentioned it as a sideline really.

Listen carefully, I will say this only once.:biggrin:
It only happens when selecting files to copy to the hard drive, a slight movement of the mouse when clicking makes the PC copy the file in the same folder and add it to the end of that folder.
I dont know why it does that but as I said earlier it did it with my old PC as well, which was on XP.

Could be that, the trouble with a laptop and separate mouse is you can get odd interaction with the inbuilt touch pad. It may think you meant to copy and paste, some touch pads are hyper sensitive you just have to look at them to jiggle the mouse pointer.

You could try turning the touch pad, or whatever it is, off. Or turning down the sensitivity.

At work there was one guy who kept accidentally moving shared folders to obscure places. He was adamant he never did it but we had file history turned on and could see it was him that did it. I'm not saying it's you that is the problem just that there are a few window's shortcuts that can catch out the unwary.
