Thanks Simbad I'll make sure I stake every year.
For staking my Delph's I used the Gardman plastic coated bamboo canes from B n Q . They are virtually invisible when the plants get growing. They are a little expensive but the plastic coating will make them last for years . They also do a green died cane.

I got some a few years ago from Wilkinsons, metal coated with green plastic and a ring at the top to put round the stem, still using them for hollyhocks just wish I'd bought more as they were only 99p each

Sounds nice - are they free chitting kaz?

I have a purple and white delphinium now.
Strangely the white delphinium has some blue edges to it.. Don't know why?
Not all of the flowers, only the odd one and just a tiny small amount.

After an armageddon type deluge yesterday , my Delphiniums are now Del-flat-iums :wallbanging: They got battered down by the rain and wind . I'll try an resurrect them after the weekend . How do these plants survive in the wild ? They look stunning but need staking and are a bit wimpish in heavy weather. Will they tend to get a bit stockier in future years ? This is year 1 for mine.

Well I thought I was prepared, tied my onopordum arabicum to a very thick metal stake yesterday, flippin thing still fell over 8ft tall and covered in spikes its tied back up with a lot of oooing and ouching, not really something you want to get in a fight with :hate-shocked:
Your delphiniums should bulk up a bit next year Harry, I chopped mine back a couple of weeks ago as they'd finished flowering in the hope of a second flush september/october, they've got fresh leaves so fingers crossed.
