Dendrobium kingianum

I think they flower next year - mine flowered after the drying off it got over winter. I suspect if your keikei has flowered, and has lots of roots, it's worth separating and planting up.

 

Time for an update.
During the summer, it grew LOTS of roots.
It also put up 5 new canes.
It must like me, because today it opened the first flower, on the first inflorescence.
There are at least 7 inflorescences shooting up, with 1 cane putting up 2.





I couldn't grow it in Australia, but I can in UK!
Weird world or just the availability of info with the internet now.

Lovely colour flower @Fof Never had much luck with that one but the white flowered Dendrobium does well for me - too well sometimes as space is a bit limited
I keep mine outside in their pots for most of the year - they then come into the GH ( unheated ) until frost is a risk. I find they like the cold spell and they usually start flowering from March onwards.

Interesting colour for the flowers. Ours are more on the pale side but very fragrant. Nothing at the moment to show flower spikes.

 

Fragrant! I didn't notice anything when mine flowered. I'll have to check next time.

 

Mine have a noticeable scent

 

I haven't noticed any scent, but only 1 open so far.
I am 80, and have noticed that my sense of smell has definately deteriorated over the years. More and more flower scents are being lost to me, but they are beautiful still.

 

Both of my plants are in the greenhouse, its cold in there so basically doing nothing at this time of the year, one was outside all summer and got a bad attack of slugs and snails.

To be honest the flowers are just too small for me I prefer something with a bit more wow factor, if you know what I mean, but a nice small pot plant that doesn't get out of hand.

Not noticed any scent, but then I never expected one until now, will have to give them a bit of a coax along and get some flowers to have a sniff.

 

Ours are in the laundry area which does get heat from the kitchen and nearby bathroom. If it is very cold we have a heater that we put on. They have always had a scent and whilst small flowered there are many on the stems so still worth growing.

 

Yes, the Dendrobiums I grow have long stalks of small scented white flowers. The only other orchids I've actively grown are Cymbidiums - large flowers, various colours but not scented. Like the D's, they seem to like a spell of cold so I treat them much the same.
I do have one of those Phaelonopsis - it was a gift from the local Bonsai Society to say thanks for donating a load of pots, etc. to them. I hadn't realised that the flower stems shouldn't be cut back after flowering so I now have 1 short bit with 1 flower bud and a new flower stem. I'll be more careful this time

 

Decided ours needed repotting. So the largest after a struggle to get it out of the pot has now become one larger plant and a slightly smaller one. Very well rotted with some good strong bulbs. As always we never have room for the extra pots.

 

Whoops! I hope they weren't rotted, @On the Levels .
Now that more blooms have opened, even with my poor sense of smell, I can smell their scent.
Probably better later, as more open. , YESSSS!!

 

@Fof oh dear! You are quite right they weren't well rotted but of course well rooted! I should check more carefully before I post.
