Clueless, Sheal. When you think about it you only have to give up 1 cigarette a day, the first one. I gave it up 14 years ago using self hypnosis and I have not had the urge to smoke since. As Watergarden says though, you must really want to give up smoking though.

I smoked from 1968 until 1994, Iwas on about 30 a day for the last 10yrs, also spent a fair bit of the time smoking Hamlet cigars, I liked the advert.:D
Anyway, after a few abortive attemps to stop over the years I just decided it was costing me too much, although I must admit I really did enjoy a smoke.

Unless you are determined you wont make it, I just told myself I was now a non smoker.
No kidding, I was still hankering after a smoke 2yrs later from time to time, and occasionally still do if I get a wiff of someones ciggy.

Didn't use any patches, gum or any gimmicks. Often these are more expensive than the proper thing.

You either smoke or you dont in my opinion, there is no half way, and only YOU can do it.

So hang on in there Clueless, its really worth it in the end.

This is the whole crux of giving up. If you don't really want to you probably won't manage it.
My Mum smoked all her life then one day she just announced "I'm sick of these they make me cough" she opened up a fresh packet of 20 and kept them in the cupboard in case she wanted one, but she never did and she never smoked again!!! You've got to WANT to!!!!

Both my parents smoked, Mum bought whatever it was she smoked, Dad rolled his own. One day Mum decided she was going to give up - usual thing 'when I've finished this packet'. Anyway, the packet was finished and, knowing there were no more in the house she got withdrawl symptoms - so bad was it, that in the end Dad rolled her one of his. Two drags, she turned green, was violently ill and never touched another cigarette in her life!

I gave up in 1964 :rolleyespink:. I can't even stand the smell of cigarette smoke now.

Following on from what Jack said about having a black mark against you with the NHS. On the reverse of that, if you have a private pension you can get a higher annuity form you pension provider if you're a smoker. They know that the odds are you won't live all that long after retiring!!!

Dim, I was tempted to tick the like button for your acknowledgement that it will catch up with you one day, but 'like' didn't feel appropriate given the very sad elements of your post.

Part of the reason I took the decision to quit this time is because in recent years I've seen 2 good men, both smokers, die earlier than they deserved to. In addition to that, my dad, who has always been remarkably fit, nowadays isn't. He's got a serious illness that could kill him, or could leave him wheelchair bound. Or at the very least, means he cant walk very far without developing pain. That in itself is bad enough, but I acknowledge that people grow old. The worst bit, when I was still smoking, was when I'd look at my young son, and think to myself "This kid idolises me and yet he doesn't know that I'm slowly murdering his dad".

As for it catching up with you one day. I think I've experienced that first hand. When I was in my early 20s, smoking 30+ per day and drinking far more than anyone should, I was still as fit as a fiddle. Bad lifestyle choices didn't seem to apply to me. It seemed I could do whatever I wanted and still be fine. Now, I'm not a young kid any more granted, but I've got a while to go before I can start blaming my age for things, yet a couple of months ago just before I quit, I was so unbelievably unfit. Alarmingly so. Running was pretty much out of the question, and even walking briskly up a couple of flights of stairs, something that a man in his 30s should be able to without even noticing, I'd get short of breath.

Nowadays, a couple of months in and heading for the 3 month 'wall' (there is well documented anecdotal evidence that at 3 months in, the cravings come back with a vengeance and you just have to ride them out), despite random mood swings, I actually feel better than I have in a long time.

              Hi Clueless,

Glad to hear that you have taken the step to quit the weed.:thumbsup:Mr Kandy was a heavy smoker ciggies from the age of 18 as a bit of rebellion from his very strict upbringing.Even though i used to gently suggest to him every New Years Eve that he might like to pack it in as a Resolution for January1st he would just roll his eyes and carry on puffing away like there was no tomorrow.

I used to dread going on holiday as the car was always full of smoke from the minute we set off and even with me opening the car windows did no good as the smoke still wafted past in fron of my face:gaagh:

Anway to cut a long story short even after I had been diagnosed with Bronchitis by my Dr due to me being a passive smoker for 27 years it still took him another two years to finally shock me when he told me he had made an appointment to see the nurse at our surgery to get some patches.:happydance:He was supposed to start them on April 1st but went down with man flu so it was April 7th when he finally stuck the first patch on and since that day he has never ever had one puff on his pipe.{He even let me throw everything away to do with his pipe}although we kept the ash tray and the little knife he dug the old stuff out of his pipe with:D

In April it will be his 4th anniversary and I am so proud of his achivement and I know that if could find the strength to pack it in then so can you:thumbsup:

The only downside of him packing it in is that he has put on 1 1/4stone in weight and I still have the bronchitis which I know will never go away but at least we still have each other which is the main thing:D

A good friend of ours used to smoke ciggies since the age of 18 and had a mini stroke in his early sixties, has had to have stents put in was diagnosed with COPD{ Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and last week ended up in hospital and is now home although he now has to have oxygen for 15 hours a day.He is only 74 which isn't really that old by todays standards:rolleyespink:

You owe it to your son {in a nice way}to keep at it if you can because he and you will both be healthier for it...You know it makes sense:)

Hope you and your family have a very :merryC: and all the very best for 2012:)

Oops, sorry Dai that should have read as four years not five:oI had even asked Mr K as well as to how long it has been and he said four so don't know why I put five:DI used to have a thread on here but couldn't find it so it must have got lost in the mist of time:D

Hope you and your family have a quiet Christmas as I think I read somewhere on here that your other half has been unwell of late so I know you both need some quality time so hopefully other family members will do their share of the hard work this year and in the months to come.My thoughts and prayers are with you both at this time :)
