There's a limit to what you should put up with - even for family. I'd be inclined to tell your wife you've had enough of him. I'd also pput him in his place, verbally, when he makes those stupid comments.

Without a doubt, you should immediately tell him there will be no smoking in the house. Since we moved here (40 years ago) no one has ever been allowed to smoke in the house. It's not my place to tell people they should stop smoking (that's up to them) but in my house I set the rules (with Mrs Shiney's permission ). Most of my smoking friends wouldn't dream of smoking in someone's house and the majority don't even smoke in their own houses.
