Thanks to Meccano I had no problems with gear boxes and differentials, but I could never get the 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear on my bike sorted out. I was glad to change to the deraillieur type.

Blimey - Sturmey Archer! There is a name you don't hear anymore!

In fact, another name that you seldom seem to hear nowadays - whatever happened to Raleigh?

That's kanji. My kanji interpretation skills are a bit rusty but it's something like, the ceiling is accessed via the little ladder that cones with the bigger ladder next to the chest of drawers. It's in the house next to the squiggly thing with a lid.

I was never cool then! :snork:

Sturmey Archers (or rather, the japanese copy by Shimano) are still very popular here, as they are considered more reliable for the abundance of gravel roads.

Ah, Shimano - they were the 'in thing' to have on your bike when I reached secondary school. I could never afford a bike with Shimano gears...

Shimano have the lions share of the market here now. The last time I saw a cycle with gears that were not made by them was about 1980. That was a Swedish Crescent, and it had something as exotic as a two speed automatic hub. Lovely cycle to ride, apart from the fact it had a rear hub brake. A "back pedal brake" as we used to call them. Stirrup brakes were considered dangerous! :snork:

Sturmey Archer are now owned by Sun Race, a Taiwanese company. A German company called Rohloff produce a 14 speed hub gear, the price is considerable and these are used in high end touring bikes.
My mother had a back pedal brake bike at one time and having been taught to back pedal slightly when changing the Sturmey Archer hub gear promptly came off.
