Maybe this issue could be sorted out also ... it happens to me from work constantly although at home its perfectly fine!

I also thought I would bump the issue for Aaron as no one seemed to notice his comments :)

Nothing worse that having to keep putting in your username and passwords for regular sites esp as some of them were set up so long ago I wouldnt even remember the passwords for them now! Does only seem to happen on GC from work though.

Ebay is the one I have problems with at home, but then I am sure OH has done something to that to stop me spending any more money :hehe:

Of course I noticed it! And it's on the 'to-do' list for Richard.

"I've had a word with Nathan and he's going to chat with Richard to see if he'll come over and get this sorted" - this meaning the content of this thread.

I've started using the "New Posts" section and it seems to work fine. I haven't opened it in a new window (I'd probably have to log in again to do that!!) and even replying to a question/thread, then going back to New Posts still shows them as unread.

Still having to log in each time I visit. Even if I leave the forum open on my computer and come back to it 10 minutes later, it's booted me off and I have to log in again...but at least it recognises my password!

That sounds very much like an issue with cookies on your machine. Do you have cookies enabled (you will have unless it switched it off)? Also it is possible that the cookie file for GC has become corrupt somehow. It might be worth, if you haven't tried it already, deleting cookies and browser history from your machine, so that each site you visit can recreate them. That way if they had become corrupt, then that would sort it out.

Another thing I've found is that when I come here (and some other forums), I have to make sure I put the URL in in full. If I just type in gardenerscorner.co.uk it still brings me here, but roughly half the times it won't let me log in, or says I have logged in then says I'm not. If I put the URL in full, ie www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum then I consistently get no trouble with login.

I deleted all cookies when it first happened earlier this week. Result? I had to remember passwords for ALL sites/forums/online shopping sites that I visit! Since then, all have kept me logged in, except GC.

I also did a google search for GC and saved it in My Favourites, rather than using old browser history. Since then (thanks WOW for that advice) I've not had to keep asking for a new password, thankfully.

Ahhhhh that could well be it then Clueless .... here its saved as an icon thingie at the top of my webpage so I just click on that and the page opens, whereas as at work I will type in gardenerscorner.co.uk and go from there. Obviously it doesnt like to be used just using that address when remembered passwords etc.

Strange though .... but least we have an answer if it works for Aaron. Will try it from work also next week.

    :) :)

It depends on the web server settings where you connect to, and the website itself. A cookie is encoded with the website that owns it, and when you visit such a site, your machine is checked to see if it has cookies belonging to the site. Depending on the server (and the website) settings, the cookie check can be quite relaxed, in that it just checks the domain (for here the domain would be gardenerscorner.co.uk) and sometimes the check is very thorough, requiring it to be the full URL including the www but and the specific directory (the '/forum' bit). On here (and some other sites) there is an added complication because if you just put in the domain part (gardenerscorner.co.uk), even if you include the www bit, the server redirects to the proper area, but omits the www prefix which can upset the handling of cookies.

Just thought I would add, that I noticed this reply from a new user regarding repling to their own thread (scroll down to bottom):-

    http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/questions-questions-24143.html?t=24143

It would appear that newbies are struggling to stay logged in also, which isnt a good thing IMO as they will probably just get fed up of keep logging in and go somewhere else instead .... which would be such a shame.

Just thought I would let you know anyway :)

Well I think you have fixed this problem - it works great for me now - no more missing threads. So if I fail to reply to anyone in the furtire I can only blame my bad memory or lack of time.

Thank you to Daisees, Nathan, BM, Marley and the rest of the admin team for listening to us and sorting out this annoying issue.

The Subscribed Threads now shows Read/Unread reliably, so if you want to check if you have missed anything its worth looking in there. I should have posted the details here, but being a muppet I started a new thread:

    http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/subscribed-threads-t24250.html?p=364709#post364709

(I think it only remembers "Unread" for a number of days, so if you want to check it best to do so soon to catch anything in the change-over-period, and then periodically if you feel the need ...)
