We don't have cable here, so we are reliant on the phone line (DSL?) As I understand it, the further away we are from the exchange, the slower the connection....

      A ping of 60ms is fine :)

      You can type

      PING Google.COM

and compare that with GC. Google has servers all around the globe, so there is almost certainly one "close" to you, to compare with.

GC is 80ms for me, Google is 60ms.

Repeat the PING a few times if you get large figures to start with - you might have hit a traffic jam :)

Just putting the thought "out there" ...

Some users have very interesting "graphics" in their avatars/sigs. I was impressed enough to think I may like one too ... however, when I tried to enter the same "sites", my McAfee threw up a warning about those sites.

Is it possible that users who are utilising the graphics from some sites (anti-McAfee warning) are, in some way, responsible for a drain on server rights/space? :dunno: Is it possible that this is having any impact on users ability to access the forums? Or, even, create a drain on GC?

Most days, my access is fab. However, there are blips in service which, while irritating, isn't life threatening or totally off putting - just ... irritating!

        Probably the reverse actually :)

If your signature contains a link to an image on another server (whether on McCafee's Bad-Boys list, or not), or your Avatar is on another server, then this is basically what happens:

Your browser asks GC Server for the page to display
Amongst the HTML content that comes back are links to the images [on the other site]
Your browser goes and gets those images (from those other sites) so does not trouble the GC server at all whilst it does that.
OTOH if your Signature / Avatar contains links to images which ARE on the GC server then your browser will ask for those images FROM the GC server ... adding to the GC server's load.

Having said that, your browser will store and remember those images, in case you see another page soon which contains the same images (e.g. the same signature but on another thread) and in that case it won't bother to go get the images again (this is referred to as "caching")

Knowing how BT works - it doesn't necessarily mean that you are linked to that exchange!!

Simples then. Anyone with performance problems move to Italy :)

The PING test I ran had under 10ms from servers in Italy :) :)

As I know very little about the technical side I find it a bit puzzling. I assume that the 'ms' after the number refers to milliseconds. If so, does it really matter if it's 40ms or 80ms? It takes me longer to blink!

It does really matter. A ping is a bit like a ricochet from a single bullet as there's only a tiny bit of data being sent and 'bounced' back. A web page contains a vast amount of data; many, many magazines of them in bullet terms, so the difference in the time it takes loading onto your computer would be very obvious to you.

To be honest, I don't care about 'pings' ... what is the problem, please, not only for me but for others who are asking who don't understand or want to understand 'pings'?

Ah ... you want a diagnosis without an examination or any questions about your symptoms?

                    Thanks, Dave :blue thumb:

I suppose it doesn't really matter to me as the speed of my download never gets much over 2mb. I'm told that this is because I'm so far from the exchange.
