£80 quid would be about right the bigger firms can charge less because they are able to do more volume oh a regular basis so will get cheaper tipping charges from waste transfer sites. Where as a one man band with a single van will have to charge higher rates to cover fuel labour and tipping charges so from £80 you would probably make £25-£30 quid on the job. The environment agency website has a list of licences operates you could look up there.

Well, problem solved. I have a young chap come once a fortnight to cut my grass and keep the garden tidy. He offered to take it to the "local amenity site" for £20 which was fine by me. At least I know it's being dealt with properly.

Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated.

btw, anyone watch the "allotment wars' on the Beeb last night?

I caught a little bit of it @Daisies - unbelievable how those people were treating each other; its people like those that put people off getting allotments or even getting involved in gardening at all.

I must confess that years ago, I was put off by my perception that a newbie like me wouldn't be tolerated as I didn't know the botanical names of stuff, or even how to grow the most basic of stuff. I bit the bullet anyway, mainly because I found myself with a garden that needed looking after, so I had to start learning; then, moving to this house and gaining a much bigger garden really stimulated my interest, and then I found GC and really started to learn.

I'm glad that my perceptions were proved completely wrong, and glad that GC shows on a daily basis how friendly and helpful gardeners really are :)

Yeah, what a bunch of rotters. That poor young lad (about 22) who just wanted to grow pumpkins. They decided he didn't fit and made it impossible for him to pay his rent so after a couple or three weeks they evicted him for NOT paying his rent.

Then when he went back to get his things, they locked him in and phoned the police to report him as a trespasser! Poor lad was shaking by the time he got away (sans tools!). Hardly surprising, all those toe-rags walking up and down past him in a threatening way, saying the police were coming.

But good for him, he said eventually he'd try again and hope he found a place where they were more friendly.

Shame we couldn't get word to him about GC - he would be sure of a welcome here :)
