Funny you should start this thread. Not so many weeks ago I was discussing with a residential care owner about having an internet cafe for his residents. He looked at me as if I was barmy until I pointed out that I was 70, work on two forums, own two others and have a website. And my sister (jjordie) is now 78, recently bought herself a netbook and a laptop and also has a forum of her own which she does almost all the coding for (which is more than I can do!)! Since I am still working as a nurse at 70 and intend to keep my registration valid for at least another 20 years, I would sincerely hope I am still internetting by then!

Until this thread was brought up I never thought about it
Now I have a worry, of what would happen,
Most companies will not provide more than one line to a property

I want my 100mb broadband as I have now, not a shared 50k with another fify residents, $eity I will have to keep onto me marbles then

My dearest friend Marcia and her husband Bill, they are now 70 years old, did their research about 20 years ago. They have Long Term Health Insurance (covers some of the costs in nursing home) . They also signed up for one of the "Continuing Care Facilities" called Ann's choice up in Bucks County. http://www.ericksonliving.com/ourcommunities/ach/
They plan to move there in 5 years they tell me. Sell their cute little home and move to the independant part. Their new place is near where their children live. But they are a neighbor of ours now. They just say, they don't want their children to go through the stress of "what to do" when something happens. And by the way, their cute house on an acre and a half, is such a treasure, they keep it so perfect all the time, inside and out. It will be a gem who ever buys it.
But I will miss them so much.
My husband and his three siblings had to go through lots of "craziness" with their parents and their illness and death, because they did not take steps to see into the future, even though they had an in-law in their family (me) who did this for a living for 20 years. They listened to their priest. But what do I know. Anyway, they are gone now.

It is better now, when you have choice, before something brakes, to make a plan, set things in motion for the times when you can't manage yourself. To me its not fair on your children. As I have no children, I have to make plans. Husband likes the idea of having one of our nephews be the trust holder, so be it. Time marches on, that we know. We either step with the parade or drift off like the tassels in the wind.

I am pretty sure Jack that if a resident really would want a pc (laptop could be slightly more hazardous in case it falls on your feet) and a connection, even at the cost of paying the installation and running himself if needed, that they could not deny it ! It would be hearthless!

He is just the type that care staff would love as a resident, so he may well get away with that ...:WINK1:

There is another idea to retirement. Booking cruise lines, the more you book the cheaper it is each time. And it is cheaper than a monthly stay in a nursing home. And you get pampering staff and wonderful food and a change of scenery daily. This is as long as you can medicated yourself and not pee on yourself.

Of course I have. But tell me, Daisees, what was the cruise ship's name that sunk before this one?

Apart from a load of river boats, yachts, small cruise ships (less than 50 passengers) and ferries the last cruise ship to sink was Princess of Stars in 2008 (700 dead). In 2007 the Antarctic cruise ship Explorer (no casualties) and Sea Diamond (1544 passengers OK, 2 lost).

I was partially involved in the rescue of passengers from the Lakonia disaster in 1963 (we arrived just as most of them had already been rescued). A lot of the British passengers were flown home by Caledonian Airways (Who remembers them? In 1970 they merged with British United Airways to become British Caledonian) - sorry, too much info :love30:

            Still doesn't deter me!

That was the point I was trying to make Shiney. Cruise ships are safe.

Might as well stop driving a car, more deaths by those than on cruise ships. And a fire in a nursing home, that can be so disasterous also.

Well I was on the Concordia last year same captain, a beautiful ship
I am sailing again with Costa and will continue cruising

It is just a matter of being aware and acting accordingly

All the lifeboat drills are there and well carried out, besides everytime you leave your cabin you have to open the door which facing you has a girt big sign stating where your Muster station is, and how to get to it, Just as on every hotel door,

Personally If I heard a rather loud bang and scraping noise, then the ship listed over 10 degs, then I would go to the upper deck, and if necessary sit at one of the many many open deck bars

I might just pop down to deck 4 and purchase that solid gold, diamond studded ROLEX watch on my onboard account first or TWO Depending on how bad the list was :-)

There are many life jackets and more lifeboat space than passengers if you take into account the auto release dinghies
Then as the ship went down with my Gin in hand I would drop over the side and make for a dinghy

I can not be frippant with the dead, but I believe you will find most of them will be the off watch crew, who sleep well below the water line and probably had no chance, and RIP the souls who stayed below in their cabins awaiting further orders

Their is no difficulty with the language on these big Italian ships, and besides you will find the vast majority of foreigners speak English especially ALL the Philipino crew
As an aside on the Italian ships COSTA AND MSC everything is given in Five languages and if onboard Japanese too
You are not inaundated with announcements as only the ones that refer to you are given in English

Now if you were on Cunard PnO etc they only announce in ENGLISH imagine how all the French, German, Spanish, and Italian feel

Can't wait for my next cruise and I may even get some cheap bargains on the back of Concordia

Redstar, I was agreeing with you :dbgrtmb:

Off topic a bit :(. Jack, current cruise sales have dropped to 14% below last year since this incident and, according to the analysis, this has mainly been with new cruisers as experienced cruisers are still booking. The prices of some cruises have dropped a lot so you are sure to pick up a bargain. There was even an ad from Regent that are offering about a third off one of their cruises and they rarely discount.
