Sure is! :D There are only a few basics to learn, and it grows a lot faster than knitting! One day I'll take a photo of the shawl I made for my friend's 21st birthday, in silver, and for my aunt's 80th, in gold - the pattern was called silver cobweb - and looks great!

Your Friend and Aunt must have been real pleased to receive handmade shawls from you Dendy.

Would love to see the photo please.

I have just scanned the hat I am making just to let you see.

Think I have mastered the pattern with practice.
As you can see I have made a mistake but have got plenty wool.

Shall finish the rest of the pattern and scan to let you see it finished.

Dendy do you think it will turn out like the pattern below.

I just love that long waistcoat Scotcat! All I ever managed to crochet were bedspreads and blankets, all but one in this zig-zag pattern. Still have several of them stored away. Oh, BTW, LofL taught me how to crochet, she does really beautiful work. I tended to use a No. 5 hook for all yarn thicknesses.

Hubby's auntie used to crochet lace around hankies. I have quite a few of them. It always amazed me how anyone could work with such a thin thread and fine hook. I tried it but soon gave up!

looks like it should be chain 11 - as that'll give the right look, as round 8 has to be the second of the rounds after the basic crown pattern, where the shaping is beginning. The long length of chain stitches will give you that open look at that point.

Hi scotkat. so pleased to hear that someone is interested in crotchet, and infact there are lots here that are.
I have made jumpers, shawls, and coats by crotchet. I can do a crotchet cable jumper in less than a week, while a cable jumper takes me months. I don't sew it together either, i use a dc stitch to join the sections. The only one drawback is that crotchet rib isn't as stretchy as knitted.
I made a crochetted blanket last winter in cream, dk and measuring about 15" sq. I join them together then crotchet a frill. All squares are different patterns, from lacy to complex. I'm making another one this year. One square per evening.
Once you get to make one garment, it's very easy to convert a knitting pattern to crotchet. I also like to use different stitches for jumpers etc. But you have to make a tension square about 4" so you know how wide and long to make each section. I tend to use a 4.5 hook. But the size of the needle also depends on the type of wool. It's no good using a large hook with a fine wool, It goes very sloppy and saggy. But have a go, you'll enjoy it.

Hello Dendy I am a complete nocice and trying to self teach myself but hav esadly go tstuck as its not looking like the pattern. Have got stuck at chain 11.

Mangaed to get the first 6 rounds made then from rnd 8 just went wrong.

Can see pattern on www.yarncat.com pattern Kathleen.

It will be self satisfying if I can master the art of crochet.

At least was able to read first 6 rows unless there is a mistake in the pattern.

It's fiddlier than I thought - started in bed after midnight, and found that it has to be chain 1 at the point we talked about above - but there are problems further on. When I've got time to concentrate on it, and am not about to fall asleep, I'll get to grips with it! :D
