Doing your bit this Christmas?

A large estate car pulled up across my drive two days ago, I watched thinking the female driver had pulled in to let someone pass, grrrr! Suddenly she reversed back about fifteen feet jumped out of the car and hastily stripped moss from the stone wall, shoving it quickly into a bag. At the same time she was looking around her obviously to see if anyone was watching but she couldn't see me. In just a couple of minutes she'd filled the bag and was gone. Obviously a guilty conscience at what she was doing and the moss was probably for a wreath.

We stopped giving presents to brothers and sisters some years ago. It ended up exchanging envelopes of money which seemed pointless and missed the point of giving.

On glitter / ribbon / plastic. None that you put in your council waste bin will be going to landfill. Landfill space is at a premium and with the annual increase in landfill tax it is a really expensive way to dispose of waste. Landfill makes the headlines because it is such an emotive subject but the reality is that any municipal waste that cannot be sorted will go to EFW plants to generate heat or electricity.

 

The wall runs along the road but is also my front boundary, she was pulling moss just a few feet to the side of my part of it.

 

I guess us canucks are less tolerant of bad behaviour @Sheal . If it had of been me observing theft, I would have made my presence known! I really dislike those who steal and sneaks are low too.

Course, I'm also known as an accomplished fishwife and battle axe too!

 

We don't give presents any more for a long time now,so no wrapping paper to get rid of, they don't want money either. I give a few mince pies to our friend Keith and hubby's uncle and auntie. My relatives don't live close by so they don't have anything.

Can recycle Christmas cards if the embellishments are taken off, such as ribbon, glitter and foam pads.

 

Oh I'm not that tolerant @CanadianLori. I was watching her from my armchair and by the time I'd got out of that, tackled my sticking front door and up the drive she would have been gone anyway.

 

I've got to admit tnat I do employ single use things like paper towels anytime I have a crowd here. I remove the hand towels from the powder room and put a roll of paper towels in there. The paper goes in our green/compost bin that gets collected every week. I feel it worth the waste in order to discourage sharing germs.

We do have those fancier disposable hand towels that pop up out of a box much the same as tissues but I feel they won't break down as quickly as the basic cheapie paper towels.

And nobody takes a chance on not washing their hands with me in charge

 

@shiney that sounds sensible since you do have crowds there on a regular basis. For me I only have a fair number here about 4 times a year and the rest of the time only smaller get togethers. I'll look into the linen deal - darn it- now I think about it, last spring I gave away some linen fabric I had bought years ago thinking I would never get around to using it! It was 3 yards each of black and white linen. I could have made lots of little towels with that!

 

If they're the same as moist toilet tissues that we can buy here, they probably have plastic in them.

 

Those wipes are very papery but more dense and crisp so I avoid them.

Been using a lot more wax paper rather than cling film too. I hope it is helping.

And I can hardly wait for the next report of Toonberg, the climate crisis warrior, as she goes into China and shakes her fist at the regime.. like that will happen...

On a lighter note, I am truly surprised that my gluten free snicker doodles and shortbread are close to the originals. Bonuse for me as I wanted to make one tray of GF for some people. Course now I landed up using 12 pounds of butter to get the doughs all ready for baking instead of my usual 10. I've got 8 types of Christmas cookies baked (4 are Gluten free-one comes by it honestly being meringues.) Only 8 more to bake.
And no more today. I have ceramic flooring in the kitchen and spending several hours on it is tiring.
