Hi men8ifr, lots of good advice on here for you.

I would also consider subscribing to a gardening magazine. I used to buy Garden News, a weekly gardening paper. It gave week-by-week advice on what to plant when for both ornamentals and veggies and loads of ideas for what to plant in containers for seasonal colour. I would imagne that with Christmas coming up there will soon be features for cheery christmassy baskets.

Any chance you could post some pictures of your garden as it is at the moment?

For your hanging baskets, use trailing varigated ivy (those with yellow in are particularly colourful) and winter pansies/violas. You could also try winter flowering clematis for your fence and flowering shrubs such as sarcococca (small white scented flowers December - March) and Hamamelis (Witch Hazel, yellow or orange flowers, winter).

Go to the BBC website and put the names into their Plantfinder Database for more info. You can aslo use their database to find out what you can plant for different situations, seasonal colour etc.
