      Okay PP it is.

As far as which door handles, I have the lever type door handles on the main floor. People who have trouble gripping a knob can easily push these down to open a door.

The second floor is knobs but that is because not many people go up there and I didn't want to spend the money to replace them too.

So if you know someone who will have problems with knobs due to a touch of arthritis or something similar, perhaps the lever type would save them some embarrassment and make life feel a little more independent?

You can also open a lever type with your elbow when you have your hands full.

I've fitted knobs to our utility room doors because that is where our cat stays overnight, she learnt how to open a lever type by jumping up and hanging on. She hasn't mastered a turning force yet

You'll probably come down one morning and find the cat gone and a pair of mole grips on the knob.;)

You're a great bunch of people with a lot of knowledge between you. :love30:

Thanks to everyone for your input, and thanks @Loofah for that website, it explained exactly what I needed to know, simply.

With the mechanisms giving up on my current door handles I've decided to change them all. I've never liked them anyway and had them in two previous houses. The ones I have are back plated and I'll replace with similar and the same size, so no need for new screw holes etc. Door knobs are not an option for a few reasons.

Thanks for that website @ricky101, I'll take a look at that tomorrow.

Fork handles would be a lot cheaper @HarryS.
