Would you have to take the phone with you? Or put a battery in it?

Even on Naked Driving Day? :rolleyespink:

They will probably use sensors at traffic lights, street lights, speed limit signs. Anywhere there is power. The insurance companies interrogate their black boxes through phone masts. Tons of ways to get the data.
For vehicles, without a black box, the ANPR cars would probably have some sort of system to pick them up due to the lack of a system signal.
As for the devious B*****ds, they are at it now and as long as the government make up their tax numbers from the majority the minority will still get away with it.

That would be a massive expense to put in all those sensors. :rolleyespink:

Not compared to the cost of black boxes. But then we will probably have to buy them.

I reckon that if they did use ANPR we would pay less than our road tax. :rolleyespink:

EDIT:- just to explain myself on that comment. Most of our journeys are local with definitely no ANPR. There are no traffic lights and no street lights:noidea: Even in our village (population 2,000) there are no street lights, nor in the next village.

ANPR won't be used to gather data. ANPR currently only reads number plates to check for tax, insurance and MOT. Any traffic car that passes through your village or you pass on your limited travels is probably fitted with ANPR.
A black box may be interrogated over the mobile phone system but even with a black box and regular data collection, a few miles in a quiet rural location will probably cost considerably less than the current road tax.

Years ago here, there was a kind of Black Box system used here on diesel engined cars. At the time, we only had what would be called red diesel in the UK. The boxes were sealed units, and were read when the vehicle went for its MoT test. A few days later, the tax bill arrived. A few did try to cheat, but that rendered the vehicle unsaleable. A modified version of that system could be used on EV's.

Of course, at the time, we had State owned and operated test stations, none of these private ones that the UK had or has.

I've never known a new system be put into practice without the government making more money than they did out of the old system.
So, someone will pay more and maybe some will pay less, but I wouldn't bet on it being much less.

They would probably bring in a minimum charge, just to cover administration, of course ;) followed by a big hike if you do more than the minimum mileage.

Not on the Isle of Man as you probably know @Sandy Ground. There is still no MoT test there.

The mere mention of the Island brings back a lot of happy memories. If we had been forced to use alcylate fuel in our bikes back then, the would have been forced to build two extra pits around the course, or we would never have managed to get in more than one lap without refuelling!

That would be a lot of stops - refuelling after every lap.
