Looks to me like a sandwich toaster that sits on top and heats like an old flat iron ??

Its spin-off technology from RADAR. Someone figured that extremely high frequency radio waves used in radar gear could also be used as a weapon, except when people were thinking along those lines (back of WW2 and into the cold war) nobody could quite get it right (although I saw a documentary a while ago where some of the veterens of Greenham Common claim they were microwaved to make them ill). Much later, someone commercialised the technology, stuck some microwave generating kit into a confined space and lo and behold, the microwave oven was invented.

So there we go, from early detection of enemy aircraft to reheating your Iceland ready meal, all the same technology.

      Spot on, Pam :dbgrtmb:

For some reason the toasted sandwiches taste so much better than on the modern electric version  The texture and flavour is completely different. Though you do have to stand and check it whilst it's cooking.

That's what my mother called "Pobs" :) She wasn't one for swearing and the nearest she ever got to it was saying "Blow pobs!" :heehee:

Here's another blast from the past.

A good thick slice of white bread, stuck on the end of a long toasting fork and toasted by holding it in front of an open fire for a few minutes, then liberally smothered in beef dripping. :dbgrtmb:

Was there anything better to set you up for a cold winter's day?

Loved it.. all oh so true I got married in 1950 before supermarkets always up for a challenge...Now at 82, I watch with interest other peoples baskets at the checkout and wonder in awe at their diet. I still manage to grow my own runners, herbs etc not a lot but just enough to remember what food should taste like.
              Happy New year every one.

I like post boxes. You've got the oldest one still in use in Dorset, at Holwell.

They were painted green when they first come out, till some bright spark suggested painting them in a colour that stopped them hiding in hedgerows:snork:
