I can fully understand him being somewhat cheesed off with a car value that has tanked though - especially so as ICE vehicles don't seem to be suffering the same fate. Moral of the story seems to be that EV's are great as long as they are company cars etc.

Anything in particular? I've not looked for a while, but know I nearly had heart failure when I had to change mine last year.

It was just a browse in case we decide to replace Mrs L's Golf but holy moly there's nothing that affordable.

No, prices are still nuts - particularly small to medium and automatic.

Must have cost quite a bit to retrofit, but at least it futureproofs this classic car.

Talking about buses, I posted the below image on fb of what our local bus depot in Whitehaven was like. The photo was taken in the early 80's and it doesn't actually show the full size of the depot. All demolished now and replaced by Tesco's and a carpark, we have so many carparks now, its unreal.

I wish we had more carparks they just keep building flats on them.
Latest blocks being chucked up have carparkng for only half the number of flats.
When people raise concerns and how it causes roads choked up with parked cars the reply was, they won't need to own a car because its close to the railway station.

Obviously housing aimed only for people who are moving out of London but still work there.
Meanwhile the local housing situation for locals just gets worse.

There has been three reported bus fires in the London area since the start of the year, two of those were fully electric with the other being a diesel hybrid, so I believe.

According to DVSA, in 2020-2021 there was 63 bus fires reported to DVSA, 2021-2022 there was 101 and 2022-2023 there was 53. Now it does not say all bus fires are reported, but there are a number of reason to why they have caught fire.

According to the government website, in 2020, 84% of UK buses are powered by diesel, 14% diesel hybrids with 2% being fully electric.
One of the main reasons for a bus or vehicle to catch fire is, component failure followed by electricals then engine. Also the older the vehicle, the percentage of fires increases. All vehicles have electrical wiring and the older the vehicle the more likely wiring can and will become frayed.

For me, I don't think you can actually do a full comparison of vehicle fires until there is a higher percentage of older EV's on the road. There has been reports of an increase in the number of fires of EV's which there will be as they become more popular, which you would expect. However, will they be more likely to catch fire when you have millions of EV's on the road that are 10 years old plus. I think if you were to a report based on vehicles that have caught fire that are no older than 3 years old, would the amount of fires between ICE an EV's be similar?

I just dont know where some of the places are going to come up with the space for chargers, there is often queuing going on around here for petrol/diesel and that only takes about 3 min to fill up, when you get cars stuck on chargers even only for 15 minutes or so its going to be impossible.
Unless of course they turn most of the car park into chargers and that will become a problem if people park and dont want a charger while others do and cant find one that available.

From a FB post (so there might be errors :) ) -
This is a Tesla battery. To manufacture it you need:
12 tonnes of rock for Lithium
                    5 tons of Cobalt minerals
3 tons of mineral for nickel
                    12 tons of copper ore

Move 250 tons of soil to obtain:
                    12 kg of Lithium
                    30 pounds of nickels
                    22 kg of manganese
                    15 pounds of Cobalt
                    100 Kg of rams
200 kg of aluminum, steel and plastic.

The Caterpillar 994A used for earthmoving consumes 1000 liters of diesel in 12 hours.

Finally you get a “zero emissions” car.

One day someone will work out that you dont get something for nothing, whatever we do on the planet will have consequences, even if we were all still living in caves, which I sometimes think we might be heading towards.

Its the shear number of people on the planet rather than what we do.

I can only see standards of living going one way.:frown:
