Whether it is several gallons of liquid fuel or a battery storing many thousands of Watt-hours, it all needs treating with respect.

Sorry, I have to disagree with at least part of your statement - 80k is far from end of life for an ICE vehicle, especially one that has been looked after. Modern engineering tolerances and modern oil technologies mean that 200k+ is easily achievable. Yes, they can be complex and yes you do need to know when to quit with them - but, part of that is also knowing where to take them for repair.

As it happens, this very week I have been advising a friend - her sister took her '19 plate Jaguar to the main dealer after it had a 'countdown' on the dash. It languished there for a few weeks before they looked at it, then they proudly sent a video explaining that they had ran a code-scan which identified an open circuit on the DPF fluid system (Ad-Blue to you and me) and physical inspection showed this:

      upload_2024-2-14_19-40-2.jpeg

      The bill for the repair?

      £957

For clarity, that wasn't replacing the wiring loom (which would have come near to justifying that bill), that was purely to repair the connector shown. At worst, a re-pin of the existing connector shell at around 30 mins; at best, solder in a new connector end at 10 mins. I could have done it lying on my back in the driveway, let alone having the luxury of a four-post lift that they have.

THAT is what kills modern cars prematurely.

And if you can't do that? Or if you are travelling a long distance?

I have mentioned my friend before who had an electric car foisted upon him by the motabilty scheme; they are going to replace it as soon as they can with a Renault diesel vehicle as it is quite literally ruining his life. He is spending anything between one and two hours per day, sat waiting on or attached to chargers because the council won't let him put a driveway in at his house, so he cannot charge. Apparently, they've had such a kick-back on the electric vehicles, they are swapping them out for anyone that wishes and pushing the deposits paid across to the diesel vehicles.

I do wonder how accurate these mileages quoted are, up to 300miles it says.
Now we all know that the MPG quoted by car manufactures are absolute rubbish and always have been, so I cant see why it should be different for EVs, I bet that 300 miles is closer to 200 if you drive it normally, might be less if you put the heater on and the headlights and wipers.

I know, I was playing Devil's Advocate to the earlier post about what if ICE cars were invented after EVs.

Of course not - being forced into an EV that requires charging daily because the range is garbage is all the fault of the council for not allowing a driveway. Give your head a wobble.

Masses of houses in the old town around here where they have to pay to park in their street, there is no way they would ever be able to charge a car up.
The council sell more tickets than spaces available and anyway sometimes they have to park two streets from their own house.

Something really radical has got to happen if they seriously want this all to go ahead.

Correct. You gave the reasons in your currently unedited comment to which I replied.

But that isn't an EV problem, apparently.... :noidea:

As I have mentioned before, Ford are really struggling with EV (and indeed, I have a notion they are generally)...

They expect to LOSE $5bn to $5.5bn this year on EV's:

That's absolutely an EV problem. EV ownership doesn't stop at the vehicle, it's the entire infrastructure to make it all work. That includes the supply chain for manufacturing, production, sales, ownership and insurance, maintenance and the ability to charge the things.
Replacing an ICE car for an EV is not just swapping like for like and currently the UK ain't up to coping.

A link for the Honda battery factory below that I mentioned earlier. My son lives on the edge of Jeffersonville, a small rural town, and the factory itself won't directly interfere with his life. But the initial 500 houses that are going to be built for some of the employees on the farmland at the back of his home will. The access road for these properties will be built on a narrow piece of 'no mans land' between his home and his neighbour.
