      Yeah, but they won't.

Why do I get the impression the future is looking so much worse than the past.
Or is that just an age thing.

I seem to recall one petrol company use solar pv panels on their canopy roofs so maybe they could keep going?

Probably would be considered too dangerous to run a petrol generator, they do have signs up about switching off engines whilst filling up.

I’ve always wondered what Dyson’s EV was going to be. Probably something stylistically different, faster than anything…and holds a charge for 20 mins, by which time the tortoise has passed you at the charging station on its way back from Tescos

The new Dyson EV will sweep the roads as you go.

Solar panels on the roofs of supermarkets, warehouses, filling stations and stadiums, charging batteries as currently used at charging stations, is the future. Monocrystalline solar panels work well in cloudy conditions with a conversion rate of 21% against 15 - 20% for a standard solar panel in sunny conditions. They get energy from wavelengths that pass through clouds as well as from visible light. They are currently slightly more expensive than the standard Polycrystalline panels but that difference is steadily being eroded with improved production methods as production is scaled up.

I agree, if you added up all roofs suitable in the country the area would be massive.
Maybe we could then stop covering farm land with them.

@john558 I totally agree. I was having just that conversation with someone last evening. Why create an electric car if you are going to power it with "dirty" electricity! If I could charge it while it is sitting in my driveway, either from solar panels on it's upper surfaces or panels on my house, it would make "environmental" sense of this push to go electric.

As a "by the way" none of the solar panels I have are on my roof. They are attached to a fence or the side of my house with the bottom being jutting out anywhere from 10 to 40 degrees.

As long as the surface gets sunshine, you're going to get power.

Literally whole sides of apartment buildings and highrises could have solar panels to help offset what the structure draws from the grid or power vehicles in the underground.

Then you have to take into account the amount of fossil fuels used in the manufacturing of the battery.
If the manufacturing part of the battery is with fossil fuels and your then charging your vehicle without renewables, then you have to do between 80,000 and 150,000km before its greener than an average petrol car.

Are electric cars greener than petrol cars? | Greenpeace UK

The car manufacturers will need huge invest in renewables to manufacture EV's, which will probably result in the cost to buy one increasing.

Until they work out that there are too many people on the planet they can fiddle around with all these so called "green" ideas all they like but it wont change a thing.

If you were able to get free energy the next problem would be how are we going to feed everyone, and so it will go on, you cant overstock the planet and then wonder why its all going t*ts up.

And don't your think that there should be an option if you just want a small vehicle for local errands only, that you should be able to get a smaller battery?
