I just about remember these. Think they were taken out of service in the late forties. :old:

Think they were eventually superceded by the bus behind it.

I also remember travelling on the old London trams and they were soon followed by the new trolley buses. We used to laugh when the arms (think they were called booms) of the pantograph on top of the buses used to get unhooked and start swinging all over the place. :rolleyespink:

I used to go to school on trolley busses.
There was one point where the conductor had to get off and pull a handle depending on which direction the particular one you was on was going, it was a place they often used to lose the arms and they would drop off the wires the other times were power cuts.
    Everyone off and walk.
Electricity has never been reliable for running vehicles.

You had to get your road speed and engine note about right before you changed gear.
The strange thing was that the Guys were never used on service, so why did we have to use them to get our PSV Licence?

I loved driving the Leyland Nationals.

        Hi,

It's always surprising and interesting where these threads go.

The largest vehicle I drove was a Scammel Crusader bulk tipper; I also drove Albion coal wagons like the Reiver the worst ever wagon I drove was a Seddon mill wagon with canopy above the cab which had a very very limited steering range from lock to lock; I was once leaving the Grimsby fish docks and just outside the entrance was a silly little roundabout; I shunted and shunted but the thing refused to go round; the gateman shouted to me saying can't you drive; at at this I went over the roundabout.

Definitely not an electric vehicle but one which will see most electric vehicles out here's a rare picture; no it's not Lawrence of Arabia but Colin on a Brough Superior back in 1973.

        Colin on Brough Superior.jpg

Sure brings back memories. I liked the Atlantean? buses when they came in and used to have fun on the rush hour to Leeds during the usual gridlock; I'd be at the front having a natter with the driver and I'd say watch this; I'd give a big yawn then we would laugh as it went around the lower deck; happy days.

Electric vehicles; no thanks I'm a ex coal mine mechanical engineer dating back to the steam days when machinery lasted forever without semi conductors which can fail just by handling them.

        Kind regards, Colin.

I loved driving the new (when I was driving) Dennis Optare.

          Dennis Optare Dunfermline 27-7-06.jpg

They were like driving a car and great fun on a winding country route. The only problem was the insistent beeping when the indicators were on. One driver refused to signal saying he knew where he was going!

Seems electric buses are not such a new idea, these were running in London in 1908

Still off topic whilst waiting for more electric cars:-
That electric bus has reminded me of Maple's store in Tottenham Court Road. I remember it in the 50's and 60's.

I think they chucked the older stuff or the harder stuff at us to make us better drivers - - ultimately, I think they were right too.

I could weave a National, Olympian or Metro through gaps at a fair old lick, and often with not much more than a cigarette paper's width to play with. When I think of the speeds we used to batter around in service it is quite scary. When I think of the speeds we did out of service, it is truly frightening.

A load of the older diesels that were laid up ready to go for sale have been hauled back out into service as it looks like it will be a long time until these electrics are trusted. Only one model, Optare bodied. Can't say I have ever really been a fan of Optare stuff, even their diesels.

I got an old decker one shift and every time I put my foot down the brake pedal was in a different place. It must have been moving 6 inches side to side.

Hell's teeth! I've had a few rough ones, but not as bad as that I don't think. I did have an MCW burst a power steering hose right near the pump connector in the engine bay - hydraulic fluid departed within seconds as you'd expect. Called it in, engineers were flat out and it was going to be at least an hour and a half before they would be anywhere near heading toward me, so I told control I would run it back in myself (I was finished at the garage) - needed to stand up to get enough leverage on the wheel at some junctions, but I got it home.

When I was an inspector, the engineers loved me being on shift as I either got buses going again or swapped them and dragged half dead ones back to the garage myself. I miss it.
