I find it unreal that at a time when the grid is asking smart meter people to use less energy at certain times in order to stop blackouts they are still pushing for EVs
Get the power problems sorted first.

They are even warming up coal power stations now because its been very cold and no wind.

Sort out fundamental problems before creating new ones? That's not the government way!

Due to the report from the sinking of the car carrier Felicity Ace, Havila Kystruten, which operates costal passenger services has banned EV's, hybrids and hydrogen vehicles from their vessels.

            Hi

The M1 motorway has a long stretch near Meadowhall in Sheffield limited to 60 mph due to air quality; what would be the difference between a vehicle driven at 60 mph and the same vehicle driven at 70 mph over say five miles; the faster vehicle would clear the distance quicker whereas the slower vehicle would remain longer in the distance; I must be missing something.

Our 2.0L diesel Yeti is the adblue model; if our Yeti is so less polluting as to attract only £30 per year road tax why aren't all diesels on adblue; I don't understand this modern age when everything appears upside down but then I'm a dinosaur.

            Kind regards, Colin.

The bit you're missing is that we're not talking about one vehicle. It's about the cumulative effect of very many vehicles.

It takes more energy, and therefore more fuel, to do 70 than it does to do 60.

But that's only part of it. The bit that so many people seem to miss is that the difference is very small when the speed is constant, which around junction 34 it very rarely is. The worst of the emissions happen during acceleration, so the real consideration is the amount of fuel you have to burn to get from say 50, upto a given speed, only to slow down again due to congestion, and do it again and again until you're clear of the congestion. It takes a lot more fuel to get from 50 to 70 than it does to get from 50 to 60. Then on top of that there's what they used to nickname the concertina effect. If the car in front of you does 70 mph they will close in on the car in front of them doing 50 very quickly, then brake. You will have to brake harder because your reactions are not instantaneous, so while the car in front of you might slow down to 50, you'll probably slow to 40. The driver behind you has to brake even harder, so ends up dropping to 30 and so on. Then all those vehicles have to accelerate again, burning loads of fuel. By capping the speed limit, this effect is reduced, smoothing the flow, and reducing the overall emissions very significantly.

Isn't there a steep-ish hill on the motorway to go up just before Sheffield? that will burn more fuel and also (long time since going up that way) isn't Sheffield lower than the motorway??

Read the road ahead, not just the vehicle in front.

A vehicle travelling at 70 uses more fuel than one travelling at 60. Over five miles the one travelling at 70 uses more petrol/more pollution than the one at 60 - time does not come into it. It is the distance travelled that counts.

                        Hi,

Why not drop the speed to 5 mph and go back to having someone walk in front with a red flag? Someone in Bradford a while ago asked the question how doe's Bradford save the cleaner air; one reply stated don't let it escape to Huddersfield. :yay:

Thanks Jiffy it's all mostly hills around here; going uphill obviously burns more fuel but doesn't it balance out a bit going downhill; electric cars will burn more electric going uphill and this electric has to be supplied.

Couldn't agree more john558; ride a powerful motorcycle at the tight end of the throttle cable whilst just looking at the front mudguard is a sure way to shorten any lifespan; vehicles tailgating also constantly brake and accelerate.

I'm not at all interested in EV's; I hope our diesel Yeti outlives me. :dbgrtmb:

                        Kind regards, Colin.

I have a heavy right foot, always have had, I try to not do it but gentle acceleration is something I've never been good at.
Its not really about speeding, its more about just wanting to get to a sensible speed as quickly as possible.
Dont think I will change now, it too late for me.
