Like Penicillin and WW1, LED lighting was not developed when they were punting the low-energy lamps that took half an hour to get to full brightness.

 I still dont get it I'm afraid.

But it does point out that they forced us into something that was rubbish before they had a sensible alternative.

No it doesn't. There was no coercion. I tried one of the crap low-energy bulbs but didn't like it, so stuck with the old bulbs and only changed to LED lamps two years ago. Earlier this summer I was clearing out the shed and threw out about a dozen incandescent bulbs.

Which just backs up what I was saying months ago. As more EV’s enter the second-hand market, the more affordable they will become.

        Hi,

My friend tells me the only time he'll buy an electric car is when he can fill a Jerry can with electricity; sums it up pretty well.

        Kind regards, Colin.

That's good news for the second hand market, but what about new registrations. The fleet sector has been the driving force of new BEV registrations, which is now the main reason for the large depreciation in the second hand market as supply is out stripping demand.

I still would not purchase a second hand BEV, who knows how much further they will depreciate, while an ICE is holding it's valuation

After they stopped selling incandescent lamps and before the LED revolution they had lower energy lamps which were basically a halogen envelope in a standard lamp housing.

I still have two three-branch light fittings with the candle-style lamps of this tyre. These do not suffer from slow start-up.

Also, according to government guide lines backed by the National Fire Protection Association when a battery is damaged in a collision, the vehicle must be stored at least 15 metres away from all other objects. Repair centres will need more appropriate storage space to accommodate damaged BEV's in the future.

                Hi,

I've spent the morning doing more rust proofing on our seven year old planet destroyer Yeti; as I jacked one front wheel off the ground it set the Yeti's alarm off; I'd forgotten to open and close a door.

No problem at all doing this at home on our driveway but it did make me wonder about jacking up an EV to change a wheel; the EV battery being virtually the car floor would it distort at all; just a thought.

Looks like we ICE owners will be paying more for our insurance due to EV's costing so much to repair assuming they aren't written off; the only good thing I can see regarding EV's is their absence.

                Kind regards, Colin.

In fairness @Retired one of the reasons that premiums are rising is purely because insurers are dealing with claims on a fairly rapid basis by simply writing a vehicle off without any physical inspection. The insured party simply submits photos and unless the vehicle is relatively new and/or the damage very light, they will simply write the vehicle off and pay out. Those vehicles are then sent off to companies like Copart who are in turn selling the ones that can be sold, on to those in the trade who will repair them and put them back on the road as a 'cat' car.

Behind this is the cost or repairing modern vehicles - they are designed to absorb the energy of an impact (this is a good thing!), but that results in panels crumpling more than they perhaps would have done 20 or so years ago. Even headlight units are frighteningly expensive (they are over £1000 for my car, for example) and insurers must use new parts and the repairs have to be warranted... so they get written off and rebuilt with used parts as above.

The final, and very real problem that is the scourge of the insurance industry is the cost of the "courtesy" cars that get given out - I had this years ago when someone reversed into the rear quarter of my X-Type. The insurer said I would get a courtesy car whilst mine was in for repair and the third parties insurer would be picking up the bill as it was his fault - I expected, and would have been happy with, the usual Fiesta sized car but no, they insisted it be similar to my own car and because I had a Jaguar the hire company delivered a brand new Lexus (only a few hundred miles on the clock) - - they charged £180 per day that I had the car, and the bodyshop had my car for three weeks (which I felt was excessive given the damage); I reckon that car hire cost more than the actual repair.

I just think insurers are charging more, because they can, its rip off time folks and lets all jump on the bandwagon.
Everyone else in the chain is charging more so why not insurers, that's how inflation gets a hold and is difficult to get out the system once in there.

There is a deal of that too, yes. Greed is all around us - even government bodies are at it.
