I just love receiving cards, to go into the house on a cold day and see them lying on the hall floor gives me a warm feeling. And I love to play the guessing game with the handwriting. I think receiving cards from someone you haven't seen for a long time brings back happy memories. I have to admit some of the e-cards I have seen are quite effective -but do love to see the cards on the mantlepiece etc.

That was my mother's birthday :) She spent a whole childhood getting one gift: "That's your Christmas and birthday gift in one" (naughty :nonofinger: )

So, my father made a special point of her birthday - the one day of the year he would take her to the local at lunchtime for a guiness :heehee: (the rest of the year she stayed at home :roflol: ). My father's birthday was Valentines Day ... so, the pair of them decided that we'd all be brought up putting birthdays first and foremost and any "annual" celebrations/cards/gifts were of lesser importance. For my mother, Christmas was a christian occasion anyway, not a commercial one ;)

Living on an "Oldies" estate there is the "Community" Christmas Card list and the Friends/Rellies list. Thats over 100 every year.
Luckily only about 20 are posted, and that list is gradually reducing.
What I REALLLLLLY hate is the annual bind of OH committed to sending a card to someone she forgot/crossed off who suddenly sends a card just before/just after 25/12. What's the point?
More to the point - guess who gets the job of writing + delivering the lot!

We send cards but the list is shrinking gradually, no e-cards, too impersonal.
Now 2nd class is upto 50p a time Royal Mail must have shot themselves in the foot as this alone will decrease the number of cards sent.

I have done e-cards for years (not Jacqui Lawson or Hallmark) but they are my personal ones ... photographs I have taken and designed and individually send to each person I choose to send them to ... does that mean you don't want to hear from me this year, strongy? :cry3:

PS It is a difficult thing here as the Portuguese don't exchange cards but there are a few places (like Iceland arriving here, which doesn't help anyone not living near it) and one or two other 'English establishments' who sell cards. The Red Cross here (Cruz Portugal) started doing cards a couple of years ago, for sale in Portuguese grocery stores, but it's like 6 cards for €2 and if you don't shop in those stores, then they are just not available. Our postage is cheaper here than the UK on the other hand.

My dear OH ( bless him) has just done "his " cards for his friends and family - about 35 -40 cards. Then, there will be "mine" ( same criteria) and then the "abstracts" that we will both do over the next week. We ARE making a concerted effort to hand deliver, where we can this year as the cost discussion has been well aired with quite a few close F and Fs. All in all, getting on for a hundred and I think ecards are gonna be the way things will go - a bit like shopping on line which is gradually overtaking High Street/ Vast Shopping Centre marathons which I absolutely loathe. You can write personal messages in email cards and choose ones you think a recipient will like can't you?
So, whether you/they like it or not I might be sending one to you !!

:) I have the subject 'in sight' ... literally as it is about 20 meters away from where I am sitting, but am waiting for the right 'moment' and 'light' ...
