Well, if you do have any problems post them here, I'll be glad to help sort them out (if I can) - meanwhile back to the digging etc....

Probably just needs a new hard drive. But unless you have a copy of XP, a new HD is not much use.

Basic summary - XP was far too successful for Vista to even make a dent in it's popularity, commerically it wasn't that successful. Everything I hear about Windows 7 though is excellent, I think it even has a mode where it lets you run XP programs in a different window. Next PC will still be a Mac though.

I have had problems logging in to GC lately :(
but at last it has worked ok.

    Woo -
As you said Vista was ok I almost bought a new computer on Sunday at PCworld and
got as far as the checkout with the main package - assistant went off to pick up the
monitor from their store saying he would carry it all to the car. Luckily I didn't actually
pay before he came running back to say the appropriate monitor was not in stock
at the moment and it might be a while before new stock arrived!!! He said I could
choose a different monitor but I would have to pay full price as it wouldn't be the one
that actually went with the computer as displayed.
So I told him he could keep his ....computer and I would buy one elsewhere.

Well, what would you have said?

I think I'd have said the same. The fact they were waiting for new stock implies that the Monitor is 'current' rather than 'end of range' which they were 'dumping' with special offers. That being the case you might have been able to get an equivalent if you'd asked to speak to the Manager / Supervisor but I suspect you'd have been waiting around for at least another half hour.

The market is still quite competitive and I'm sure you can find good deals in other places. The PC I'm using now was purchased from Staples, on impulse, about a year ago - it has a good specification and was going for a song (and Mrs Doogle thought the wide screen Monitor was nice)

    Hi Everybody -
on line again - at last!:yho:

It cost me £79 to discover the reason my computer wouldn't work.
I used RELOAD disc - but of course, not realising when it re-set my
computer to 'Factory Condtion' - it would be Windows XP - SP1 and
being such an old programme it wouldn't update and nothing else
    would work with it.
And dare I say it - things seem to be working OK now so maybe I
won't have to buy a new computer after all.

I have also been trying for several days to get back onto GC and finally
managed to re-set my password. It took several attempts - don't know
why but "if at first etc etc."
    :)

Now I just have to reload all my favourite programmes ....

    .

That's strange, I'm not aware of many programs that require XP to be at a level higher than SP1. Never mind, glad it's all sorted out now.

    The saga goes on!
Computer has started freezing up again.
I did an HDTune scan (info sent by an IT friend) and it came up clear.
I have been trying to do a Memtest86 scan but having trouble making a bootable
disk to use. I can't extract the info from the zipfile to a CD as I just get a message
that says unable to copy - could be corrupt.....
If/when I do manage to run the test and there are any errors at all then it is the RAM at fault (I am told).
So I am still struggling to sort it out - if not I'll have to revert to my original plan to go for a new computer:skp:

Maybe you need some more RAM - are you upto maximum. Go to the Crucial website and they will run a check.

i'd recommend downloading tune up utilities 2009 to optimise pc system, its amazing how many errors and useless rubbish fills xp and vista up.

as for vista...wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

:( Sorry to hear that jj. Can I be honest? Didn't understand a single thing you said there:scratch::cnfs::hehe:. Seriously, I hope you are sorted out. I think they (whoever 'they' are) keep complicating things to confuse us mortals. They do it with everything.

Think my pc needs a good sorting too, although it has a 'health check' every year with our payment thingy:scratch: Way beyond my understanding but I have picked up some very good things here.:thumb:

Please let us know how you get on cos it benefits us all, sooner or later:skp: :hehe:

    cheers

When you say that the computer is freezing, do you mean the whole computer or just Internet Explorer? (ie can you run other programs when it 'freezes').

    Hi Doogle

Everything seems to freeze whatever programme I am using.
I try to use the cursor and/or keyboard to close whatever down but it won't
budge and in the end the only way to move anything is to turn the computer off.
