Freelanders deserve to be messed up, so good on ya!!!!

Ie; as in using it for fuel?
I would never use any bio diesel as the failure rate of diesel pumps does increase.

Are you seriously saying that 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles is acceptable?
      Sounds more like a 2 stroke.:D

Good man Ziggy - that's one less to trip over!!

Pete - i'm not, but the manufacturers are. I believe BMW say a litre per 1000km.

Let's face the facts, when did we last see a modern car burning oil (blue smoke, not blabk or grey)?

Well I must admit you dont often see blue smoke Longk.

But I do get a bit wound up when I see all those nice environmentally friendly diesels chucking out all that black smoke and paying less road tax due to low emissions.

I was told my Mini (a BMW in all but name) can get through a litre every 1000 miles. It doesn't in practise, it uses a litre every 2,000 miles or so, maybe if it's driven hard it will use more. Just looked at my last service invoice, I got a couple of litres of oil at £17.46 each (plus VAT) but it does come in it's own zip up pouch with a little spout :rolleyespink:

Some black smoke under full load is good - soot is a by-product of complete combustion. Excessive black smoke is usually an indication of EGR issues, but there are many other issues that can cause it too.

As I'm in the trade I prefer regular exposure to the black smoke to the carcinogens that a cat equipped petrol engine produces.

          You'll have to translate!

As you may have gathered, I hate Freelanders!

          The reasons I hate are;
          a - they drive 'orrible
b - whenever I work on them my hands get cut to shreds owing to their outstanding build quality!

Are we missing a zero here and mean 10,000 miles
I use about three teaspoons full of oil over 10k mile service
The oil is £10 a litre so services cost £50 for oil alone
Engine Oil, Motor Oil, Gear Oil, Car Oil, Motorbike Oil from oilman at Opie Oils

As for fuel if it is diesel and NOT pd then you can run it on 40/60 sunflower oil/diesel
Tesco currently have an offer of 12 litres of sunflower oil £12 with a £1.35 discount but at the till the price for some reason is the discount price, So 12 litres of sunflower oil for £1.35 :-)

Do not go to Dunfermline someone has cleared the shelves :-)

No zero missing - I repeat though that that is the max safe consumption.

Sorry, I slipped into trade talk with PD. PD stands for "pressure deutz" which refers to the type of diesel injection system used. The PD engine does not use a conventional high pressure fuel pump - the injector is driven off the camshaft to create the extremely high pressure for injection much like the earliest diesel engines. However, it is then fired electronically to get the firing point correct for ultimate efficiency.

If I were running an old style diesel that fuel mix would be fine for me, although I can't be bothered with the paper work to make the appropriate payments to HMRC!
But I personally would not use it on any modern common rail diesel. Indeed, lease companies are now sending assessors down in most instances of fuel pump or injector failure and taking a fuel sample for analysis. Useage of anything other than conventional diesel is now excluded in the T & C's of most lease agreements and will result in the company passing the bill on for payment. This is also usual practice with most warranty repairs, although the manufacturers warranties (for reasons of PR) have yet to exclude bio-diesel. I believe (although cannot confirm) that certain Mercedes diesels are now not approved for bio-diesel use (I'll have to check this out next time I'm in there) - the injectors for the models in question are over £1000 each! That could mean a potential £6000 bill depending on the model!

          It's a minefield out there!
