I think the biggest obstacle to convincing people about such things, Ziggy, is that they are convinced that [a] it can't happen to them every thing they've said or done on Face Book is private and secure [c] they don't want to believe because they like using it and therefore any criticism threatens that enjoyment.:DOH:

In the Computer Active Magazine exercise they learnt more than the full name and date of birth!! So all that information could be used in so many harmful ways. But like I said people are thinking it's not them and they've got it all covered..................and I'm thinking and betting they're not!!:D

 

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say Face Book is evil, Sheal, although I can see what you mean. Face Book is a tool, a vehicle for people to talk to family, friends and, if they want, the public. The trouble is there are people and organisations out there wanting to use that vehicle to gain information for criminal and commercial purposes and they will use such means as the Computer Active Magazine did to gain that information. And that personal information can be gained so easily, as has been shown.

I do think people tend to ignore the security issues, tending to get blase' after using it for a while, giving out bits of information in reply to other posts etc not thinking that information is of interest to anyone else and how other peoples replies and posts give out even more information, which opens up the opportunity to track the other people contributing. Some people are avid fans of Face Book and will rise to it's defence no matter what and you will never convince them of the dangers, so they will make excuses, wave their hands and say "Well, there are a variety of other ways that information can be gained." Which is true, but the point is those excuses are in a subtle way doing a Nelson and using the blind eye to look through the telescope..........which makes everything seem okay, but only because they don't want it any other way, when it's not!!! So they will continue to use it convinced that they're not giving away any information, it's only other people who do.:D Well, I know what they're thinking and you know what I'm thinking and betting!!:D
