No, it's not just you. One of the favourite meals in this house has, over the years, become known as 'Funny Tea' - a collection of those back-of-the-fridge bits which, with a bit of rice, perhaps a few spuds, a pastry topping or some salad leaves and a dash of ingenuity have turned into a meal.

I completely ignore all those daft 'by' dates - except when maybe they're nearing the end of their so-called shelf-life and supermarkets might offer them at a knock-down price. They are in any event, totally ridiculous. Shopping yesterday and I'm 'watched' as I reject punnet after punnet of strawberries, blueberries and cherries until eventually 'it' shuffles over and (in an unnecessarily threatening tone I felt!) says 'What's up with them ones then?' I resist the temptation to correct his English and content myself by pointing out that 'them ones' are rotting and mouldy as is evidenced by the look, smell and the fact that a rather unpleasant slimy substance is dripping from the bottom of the container. He sniffs (although I can't quite decide whether as the result of a head-cold or in order to assert his authority) and says 'Well, the date's OK'. You eat them then sunshine, because I've got stuff on my compost heap in better condition.

By contrast, until earlier today, I had 4 eggs in my 'fridge (yes, yes, I know all about keeping eggs in the 'fridge - but that's where mine live), in a box which said, 'Best before 30th July' - I dunked 'em in some cold water, watched them drop to the bottom and have made a very successful Devil's Food cake which even now is cooling ready to have a rum syrup poured over it before being slathered in cream - a 'welcome home' treat for Mr. F'smum on a weeks' leave from Washington DC.

How many calories in 100g? I have absolutely no idea - probably ... a few - but who cares, it's not as though we live on it.
