Strongy, I saw these last night featured on Gardiners World. They looked marvellous. I always assumed they were large shrubs. But they had some nice 6 foot pot plants. The nursery owner said it all depends on the variety. Any suggestions for a red one suitable for a large pot - as hardy as possible (though it could be taken indoors over winter)?

PeteS, the best one is Citrinus Splendens which is nearly hardy, mine survived -5c last winter but if potted it could be overwintered in the greenhouse or taken in occasionally.
The hardiest one are the common red known as Linearis or Subalatus or Rigidus (some confusion there but it's the thin leaf popular one)
Salignus, Pallidus, Mauve Mist (which is pink, pic coming up soon) are all hardy.
Citrinus Splendens has a large full bright red flower which is stunning on a mature plant.
I also have Viminallis which is the true weeping bottle brush tree, it's in a pot, 8ft high,3 years old and I was surprised that it came through this winter undamaged although the flowers just opening are much smaller than they ought to be, this variety can flower twice a year and in the subtropics all summer.
