Do they stay in the same location? Where we're picking ours from now is about 100m west from where we first saw them, they move westwards every year.

They're good eating, but only use if firm and white all the way through as when they start producing spores inside they can cause a stomach upset.

To avoid any potential mis-identification, I don't pick very small ones just poking through the soil, waiting until it's clear they're actually edible puff balls.

We always leave some to hopefully produce the next generation on their westwards journey across the field.

So @Zigs a big fry up tomorrow morning? together with scrambled eggs and fried tomatoes, maybe some (of those free) Linda McCartney sausages from our freezer with some garlic, courgettes etc.

Ours usually get mowed down as they're in the lawn. When they come up I'll let them grow and take some photos. From what I remember, they seem to grow in a line, with a slight curve to it.

Sliced up the rest and put them in the food unhydrator, even better dried, concentrates the flavour :dancy:

That's cheap modern stuff, but we do have a 12 setting 1930's Alfred Meakin Willow Pattern dinner service (consisting of alround 200 pieces) for special occasions.

Today's breakfast, Puff Balls with eggs from own hens and Linda McCartney sausages (free foraged from Morrisons when on special offer at £1 and using £1 off vouchers from LM website).

Still enough left for tomorrow's breakfast.

What, one plate? We've got dinner, tea, sandwich, fish plates each x 12 each, several sizes of serving plates, soup bowls, desert bowls and a couple of other types each x 12, tea cups & saucers and coffee cups and saucers each x 12, teapots and coffee pots each x 2, vegetable dishes each x 4, butter and cheese dishes each x 2, plus numerous jugs and other bits I can't remember at the moment.

And the whole flippin lot isn't dishwasher safe, grrrrr, nor is our Victorian dinner service, nor is our 50's dinner service, nor are our various tea services and our Clarice Cliff collection, plus polishing our canteens of silver cutlery before use is a real PITA. Which is why we tend to adopt the lazy approach of using modern china and stainless steel cutlery (good quality Viners stuff we got out of a skip during a restaurant refurb).

But what really worries me is the new for old clause in our household contents policy.

I have seen puffballs occasionally when walking. On a previous post @Zigs , what do you mean by the right sort ? I don't think I could ever be confident enough to pick and eat one. Unless Mrs H tried it first

                                There's only one poisonous one

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scleroderma_citrinum Which is pretty easy to identify.

Even then, it's gonna upset you rather than kill you of death [IMG]
