I think that both Richard and Kristen are doing sterling work on pointing out and sorting out problems and possible problems on the Forum. :love30: Thanks very much :blue thumb:

I definitely agree with Kristen about the font situation and hope that Nathan can agree. I still do some work with people that have sight problems and/or dyslexia type problems and Times New Roman is a recognised problem for them.

Also, although not a great problem, the spacing on Arial is not quite as easy for them to read as the spacing on Verdana but Arial seems to be much more compressed.

All the other things are nice to have sorted but the look and ease of reading should be a priority as it makes the forum more user friendly.

Just as a note, totally unrelated to this discussion, :- The use of Times New Roman when needing to print out documents saves anything up to 30% of printing ink. :blue thumb: I still don't use it! :heehee:

There's a lot of sense being said here, but lets not forget the effort and time that goes into this kind of work.

As a fellow developer (though not for GC), I know how much mental effort and time goes into any piece of work, and often, unfortunately, that effort goes unnoticed. Over the years I've grow to accept that us developer sorts only hear about stuff when end-users are less happy. The most amazing piece of work ever will result in total silence from the users, until the first time they notice something wrong with it:)

This is why I for one would like to personally acknowledge the effort gone into putting GC right, and to thank Rich for doing it.

I must admit I'm not keen on Times New Roman as a font, but if its an interim thing (or even if its permanent), I can live with that if it's a side effect of work done to make the site more reliable and responsive, which it certainly appears to be so far.

Its for others to decide, as you say, but speaking purely personally I would prefer that users are not able to choose a different font for their whole post, or put their whole post in a different colour, as it makes it very hard for me to read.

Easily reinstated, so not a problem of course. Definitely happened at the point of rollout though (just in case it matters for some other reason). Reason I say that is that I keep a "What's New" TAB open and re-query that several times a day, so I'm sure I would have seen it shortly before rollout, and again after. It was not showing me the forums I had "disabled" before, and they appeared once the changes were mounted (I do not follow any of the social forums, and they have high traffic, so likely posts would start showing up as soon as the setting were cleared). I did think it was odd that that would be "collateral damage" during a rollout though. Just to reiterate: its not a problem for me, easily recreated, if it gets triggered again I'll report back. (Nobody else reported it, maybe I'm the only one using it?! I LOVE it!!!)

That sounds highly likely. It self-corrected (and hasn't reoccurred) so sounds very likely just some collateral damage from the crash.

Thanks for the other fixes. They have helped me a lot. :dbgrtmb:

I couldn't agree more clueless1 - I developed, and am responsible for ongoing maintenance of, a bespoke database for my company which is in use day and daily across a number of locations and 99% of any feedback that I get is when there is a minor gripe, some downtime (usually our decrepit network as opposed to the database itself), or when there is a PICNIC fault (the most often of them all).

There is no doubt in my mind that designing, developing and maintaining a site like this must be very time consuming indeed - and the fact that it has so many features, and is generally easy to use is testament to the hard work that has been put in.

Purely as an opinion, the previous layout was better - however, I am still getting used to this layout so that could be a familiarity thing as much as anything. Let us also not forget that in some ways, the site has been a victim of its own success - the increased server demand has been as a result of increased traffic to the site both by registered users and by lurkers, some of that has to be down to how easy and user-friendly the site is to use, as well as how well moderated it is.

Whilst giving opinions, I agree that the Times font is a pain, and seems especially bad on a laptop screen when it is in its super-frugal mode with the backlight down.

I am certain however that the development will continue, and that we will see more improvements as time goes on - and if that can be achieved whilst keeping the server load to a level where we can all keep getting access to the site, then that can only be a good thing.

PS - if there is ever the desire to have something tested etc, I would be more than happy to help.

I share your view on that point.

Its been a lot faster since the rollout though, so clearly the right things have been changed. Hat's off to RR :love30:

I think the AJAX stuff that makes XenForo so slick must be contributing to that. On sites where we are using that it takes far longer to implement - and all the extra time goes into optimising and making sure it as efficient as possible. Things like Predictive Text that are calling the server every time you type a character to say "What have you got beginning with "Fat C" ... no I mean"Fat Co" ... scratch that and try "Fat Con" ... are a huge drain on resources

We run massive data warehouse caches just to deal with those queries ... so having those come into a single database like this Forum must require some Horsepower ...

Talking of which it is a source of amazement to me how quickly and efficiently Google's predictive text works. The fact that Google is clearly reading my mind is, of course, a lot more troubling!

The new Logo/Banner is wider than before, which to me looks a bit 'untidy'

I don't think there's a Forum out there on the Net that will please everyone who visits it and uses it:scratch::snork: I'm not knowledgeable at all in computers but know enough to get by and also know that while the more knowledgeable members are pointing out errors and faults some of those are personal opinions which other knowledgeable members are perhaps not in agreement with!:heehee: That seems to underline and reinforce my thoughts that despite all the hard work, skill and effort Richard is putting in not everyone is going to agree/like or be satisfied with the finished [which I'm learning never is:doh:] product.
We all, including us less knowledgeable members, have different tastes and likes regarding fonts, sizes and design and we would never reach agreement to what would be, in our eyes, a perfect design etc that we would all nod our heads to. Me?, I'm happy that Richard is there beavering away making things so much better and brighter than they have been, and also that he is there in the background [unsung] fixing any future problems we get!!:snork:
