Thanks for the cable offer but I'll see what I can scrounge off of my son-in-law, he's into the techy stuff like yourself. :)

I'd like to check out some routers just in case, so I'd be grateful if you would point me in the right direction please FC. As I've said we have Netgear at the moment and although we've been happy with that we'll consider other makes. :)

I too was a Netgear owner in the past, as well as having DLink kit also - - however, my recent overhaul has almost exclusively been with TP-Link, and I have to say their kit seems to be the mutts nuts so far; Uber-easy to set up (their quick setup guides are actually readable!), and put bluntly they work and work well.

I have the Archer C2 AC750 which is for cable connections - - - I am working on the basis that you will have ADSL/VDSL type connections on the island (I very much doubt that you will have cable), in which case I would be inclined to look at something like this wee fellow

That is the ADSL equivalent of mine, and I am like a man lying on a railway track (chuffed to bits :snork:) with mine. The dual band is handy, because you can if you wish get dual band dongles for selected kit (around £20 each) which not only makes them that bit faster, but it also gives you two networks in one which reduces congestion

To be fair @Sheal, even their cheaper single band models will be pretty good - I just know how much of a hammering I have given my new router with multiple devices as well as with access restrictions and parental controls and it hasn't as much as coughed. Three year warranty on most (if not all) of TP-Link kit seals the deal for me - - - they seem to genuinely believe in their product

That's a good salesman's pitch! Are they paying you by any chance? :heehee: Seriously though, I'll take a look and may follow in your footsteps. :)

                News for you @fat controller.

My router has been tested by Manx Telecom today, yes it was faulty and they said probably due to age, we think it's about five years old. So after asking your advice on what to replace it with we got this while we were there. No contest with choice of router as they supplied it free of charge! It's value £66.37. Apparently because they now have competition down the road they are supplying them free to loyal customers. :)

I'll give you an update in a couple of days as to improvements not only on GC but regarding my computer issues as well. Thanks for all the help you have given me, you're a star! :star:

Champion news @Sheal - especially the free bit :)

Now't wrong with a Netgear router either - one of the top three brands as far as I am concerned, and nice kit.

Some of the internal components in routers often run quite hot due to the switching speeds etc, so they are not unknown for turning their toes to the sky.

If you need any more help, just holler :)

Thanks again, we'll see how things go! :) I have a two to three hour Skype video session with my son on Sunday, that will be a good test as it tends to crash and it's not to do with Skype itself.

There's been no change with my issues on GC since installing the new router but......

Here's something of interest for you all......

When I was in discussion with the lady in Manx Telecom she made a suggestion about the issues I've been having with GC but my old brain had let me down and I'd forgotten what she'd said. Earlier this evening I remembered and have put it into action, so far so good, I just hope it isn't a fluke! :)

Still using IE, I deleted Gardeners Corner from my favourites list and then put it back having gone in freshly from the web. Bingo! I have no issues at the moment apart from raising quotes but I've always had that problem.

If any one else tries this please give me an update as too whether it has worked. Meanwhile I'll see how it goes for the next couple of days and get back to you. :)

And there is even more information in that post than you might even know - - points right back to DNS lookup, as I first guessed. I reckon, when the server has been moved, your DNS lookup has been looking at the old address first and then been being redirected (flaky as hell for want of a better way of putting it) - by clearing your favourites, the address is being looked up 'from scratch' and is now connecting directly with GC at its new home and not going via the old address first.
