    Excellent pics woo.

Cookie, I rekon a fox would leave a fit and healthy cat alone. I have heard and seen the comotion of my tuffty seeing off a large dog fox before and it was the fox that turned tail!!!!

Thanks Paul and everyone - it is very reassuring to hear that any fears I had on this score may have been ungrounded :)

One word of warning...I have heard of a puppy, which had not completed all its anti-virus injections, contracting a fatal illness from the urine of foxes which had been in the garden where it played, so perhaps young or poorly animals should not be allowed to go into areas where foxes have been.
Also if foxes are suffering from sarcoptic mange, pets should not be allowed near them.
There is a Fox welfare society which provides herbal treatments free for those who are prepared to dose it on food for foxes over several weeks. This is the website.

    That's a VERY interesting point Jack !!!

As a vet I always used to advise owners not to take their puppies to areas where other potentially unvaccinated dogs may have been for fear of contracting Parvovirus, Distemper, Leptospirosis, Infectious Bronchitis or Kennel Cough..... until they had completed their whole vaccination course and then about another week after that.

I have to confess that I never considered the danger of their own back gardens with foxes being a possible vector of transmission.

Mind you - even as humans we can potentially carry these viruses on our shoes and bring them into our own environment - but I suspect the risk from a similar canine species would be appreciably more marked - although still rare.

Do you know which virus the puppy caught Jack??

I really can't say for sure, it was some years back. I think it might have been a Labrador.

P.S. I edited my post with some more info. since you read it.

    Thanks Jack - good post!

Talking of Sarcoptic Mange - if anyone is ever worried about their dog contracting this from foxes then there is also a good prescription product called Stronghold which safely treats them for sarcoptic mange, ear mites, fleas and round worms and can be used from 6 weeks of age on.

Interesting to hear there is a herbal remedy too - I am always curious about alternatives but have yet to be really converted - but I do like to know much more about them. :)

Cookie monster, I'm afraid I wasn't told what the virus was.

The herbal remedy is actually a homeopathic one...a controversial subject, but obviously you can't put a prescribed drug out into the garden where other animals might get hold of it.

Yesterday and while making my way along part of the Bramley Line, I had TREMENDOUS pleasure in seeing 3 x Fox cubs and one got to within 6 feet of me, before disappearing into the Undergrowth. Due to my Love of these Beautiful creatures, I will keep the location to my self.
